Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We know the wildlife of Gorongosa intimately and are committed to protecting it. We insist that all interactions with wildlife are carefully assessed by our tour leader and local guides to ensure minimal impact on the ecosystem. In particular, we are careful to avoid prolonged encounters with elephants in Gorongosa, as this typically induces stress in a population that has historically been subject to poaching. We also limit the length of sightings if young animals are present, to avoid endangering them by attracting predators into the area. We also ask local guides to limit off-road driving where possible, to minimise damage to the environment. Gorongosa's wildlife was decimated during the Mozambican Civil War, and we are keen to impress upon our clients that the wildlife popualtions here have been shaped by human activity - for instance, the population of waterbuck here is unnaturally high. We will discuss this in our pre-tour briefing.

The suppliers we use during this itinerary are associated with the Carr Foundation, a US NGO who have done incredible work in restoring the ecosystem in Gorongosa. By running this tour, we are bringing investment into the area and financially supporting the continuation of these activities, including translocations, reintroductionsm anti-poaching efforts and community-led initiatives.

We encourage all clients to visit one of the community-led initiatives supported by Gorongosa National Park. These initiatives include girls' education programmes in local communities and extensive work with coffee farmers in the foothills of Mt Gorongosa. These farmers' products are used by Gorongosa on a daily basis. We encourage all clients to understand the challenges faced by local communities, and our accommodation in Gorongosa is shared by many researchers and local guides who will gladly provide this information in more detail during our stay.

We only work with suppliers who employ local people from the area around Gorongosa, and the overwhelming majority of staff working in our accommodation in Gorongosa are Mozambican. It is core to our mission that local people see the benefit to ecotourism and attach value to the ecosystems we visit and the wildlife we enjoy. This is a mission statement shared by the Carr Foundation and we are proud to support their community work through our vacations to Gorongosa.
