As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetWe know the wildlife of central and northern Chad very well and are committed to its protection and conservation. This arid and remote landscape has seen much of its wildlife lost to mismanagement, poaching and habitat destruction, but retains some small populations of several species. Pale fox, Rueppell's fox, caracal and even the few remaining Saharan crocodile remain here, although sightings are often a matter of luck. Our visit is largely intended to support the work of the Sahara Conservation Fund, an NGO that has done incredible work to reintroduce several species into Ouadi-Rime. These species include the incredible addax, scimitar-horned oryx, dama gazelle and North African ostrich. Sightings of any of these species are a rare privilege, and it is wonderful to see them roaming the wilderness of Ouadi-Rime once more.
We use a very small number of suppliers to support this tour, and we insist they match our environmental values. Our accommodation throughout this tour will consist of basic campsites, with rudimentary facilities. Whilst this is primarily intended to allow flexibility in what is a difficult area in which to travel, it also ensures the tour has a negligible impact on the local ecosystem. We take all refuse with us and never damage the environment during our stay. We limit water usage as far as possible, especially as many areas through which we pass suffer from droughts and water shortages on a regular basis.
PeopleIt is vital to our mission that local communities see a genuine benefit from ecotourism, and that our visit allows local people to attach value to wildlife and ecosystems. As such, we insist that all of our partners in Chad employ local people. Our drivers, guides and cooks are all Chadian, and all of the non-research staff at Oryx Base Camp also live in the local area. It is important that our visit contributes to the local economy, and we will do all we can to ensure there are opportunities to visit local markets in Abeche, Kalait and possibly N'Djamena.
It is crucially important that local people are treated with respect at all times, and we ask clients to bear this in mind in any and all interactions with local communities. We ask clients to dress modestly where possible, and to allows be polite, patient and courteous when meeting local people. As we are visiting a region where ecotourism is in its infancy, we may attract a lot of attention when spending time in settlements, and this can sometimes feel intrusive - we always ask clients to be aware of this, and to recognise that this come from a place of friendliness and curiosity. We ask clients never to photograph local people without an indication of consent, as a matter of courtesy.
