Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We know the wildlife and ecosystems of Rwanda well and are committed to their protection and conservation. Akagera National Park has seen a remarkable reversal of fortunes in recent years, and now supports populations of elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard, buffalo and black rhino. We recognise the importance of Akagera as the only functional savanna ecosystem in Rwanda. Historically, Akagera supported high densities of a number of endangered species - in fact, it was once known as the 'Parc aux Lycaons' due to the density of wild dogs found here. Disease wiped out these species, but the work African Parks have done to secure and preserve the park ensures that the park is ready for recolonisation by these species.

Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe are both extremely important areas for primate conservation. Gorillas, golden monkeys and chimpanzees are found here in good numbers, and every care is taken to protect them. Our visit is limited to an hour with each species to limit stress on the animals, and also to reduce the risk of the transmission of disease from humans. Guests will not be able to spend time in the park is they show signs of illness, such as cold or flu, to avoid this transmission of disease.

We insist that the guides, drivers, ecoguards, porters, chefs and housekeeping staff used throughout this tour are Rwandan, and this should be expected by all of our guests. The reason we insist on this is that we think it vitally important that local people and their communities see genuine and tangible benefits from ecotourism and, in particular, our visit. This, in turn, will ensure that local people attach value to the wildlife we have travelled to see, helping to secure the longer-term futures of the wildlife in question. With this in mind, we also strongly encourage guests to contribute to the local economy by visiting local markets or crafts stalls, and opportunities will be available to purchase from local vendors in Kigali.

We are extremely keen to impress upon our guests the importance of understanding both the 1994 genocide, but also the excellent progress Rwanda has made as a country since then. We dedicate significant time to our visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, and encourage our guests to use this opportunity to inform themselves as fully as possible about Rwanda's history.
