Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We know the wildlife of Southern Uganda very well and are committed to protecting it in any way we can. We recognise the vital importance that the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has to the conservation of mountain gorillas, as well as other forest-dwelling species such as African golden cat and black-fronted duiker. We also recognise that Kibale National Park protects regionally important populations of birdlife and primates, including chimpanzee. Semliki is one of the few strongholds for several threatened species, including Pousargues' mongoose and Semliki red colobus. Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the few strongholds for a wide variety of savanna species including elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard.

This itinerary includes night drives, boat safaris, walking safaris, game drives and primate treks. Each activity is undertaken with the utmost respect for the wildlife we are viewing and the ecosystems we are traversing. We will never remain at a sighting of an animal if our presence is causing the animal to be distressed or act in an unnatural manner. We do not attend sightings that are already crowded. We only drive offroad when absolutely necessary. At night, we never spotlight diurnal wildlife, and never spotlight a young, injured or otherwise vulnerable animal.

It is vital to the long-term future of Uganda's wildlife and ecosystems that genuine value is attached to them by local people. Our experience shows that one of the best ways to achieve this is to ensure that visits from ecotourists provide a genuine benefit to local people and the communities they hail from. With this in mind, we insist that all the suppliers we use during this tour employ local people. Clients should expect their guides, drivers, cooks, porters, ecoguards and housekeeping staff to be from Uganda or, at the very least, the East African region.

We strongly encourage clients to immerse themselves in their visit to Uganda as much as possible. This extends to learning about local conservation projects, such as those to protect gorillas and benefit the local community in an eco-friendly way in Buhoma. There is time at leisure in Buhoma and Kibale, which we encourage clients to use to interact with the local community, visit local projects and consider contributing to the future of these projects.
