Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We know the wildlife of Malawi intimately, and are committed to protecting it and helping to restore Malawi's wilderness areas to their former glory. We recognise that northern Malawi is a key area for the movement of many species of wild animal between Zambia's Luangwa Valley and southern Tanzania, and that this ecosystem must be protected to allow for this movement to continue. Lion, African Wild Dog, Leopard and much more all move through this landscape, with numerous unusual antelope species also occurring here, as well as elephant and buffalo. Kasungu and Vwaza Marsh are particularly important due to their proximity to Zambia, as is Nyika due to its unusually high density of leopards. We will never remain at a sighting if the tour leader deems that our presence is likely to distress the animal, or cause it to behave in an unnatural way. During night drives, many of which we will enjoy during this safari, we will never spotlight a diurnal animal. We will also never spotlight an animal that is young, injured or otherwise vulnerable.

We impress on all our clients the importance of using water sensible during this tour, and encourage all clients to limit their water usage wherever possible. This is particular important in dry-country areas such as Kasungu, where water levels have been historically low in recent years.

It is vitally important to use that local people see a genuine benefit from our visit, and ecotourism more generally - this helps to ensure that local communities attach value to wildlife and ecosystems, which in turn heightens the likelihood of these ecosystems will be better protected going forwards. As such, we insist that all of our local partners employ local people and clients should expect that drivers, local guides, cooks and housekeeping staff during this tour will all be Malawian, in addition to your specialist mammal-watching tour leader from the UK, France or the USA.

In addition, we work closely with a number of locally-run and international conservation initiatives, including African Parks in Nkhotakota and MEOF Lodge near Vwaza Marsh. Both organisations do excellent work to protect and bolster Malawi's wilderness areas.

We always encourage guests to approach all interactions with local people respectfully and patiently. This tour takes us to some areas not frequently visited by ecotourists, and our presence may attract attention that sometimes feels intrusive - be rest assured this simply comes from a place of curiosity. There is not the same culture of guiding in Malawi as there is elsewhere in the region, so guests are encouraged to expect that most safari expertise will come from your tour leader, with specialist local knowledge supplementing this from your local guides.
