Description of Northern Lights vacation, glass igloo stay
This trip is tailor made with departures from December to March
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetWhen staying in Tromso you will stay in a hotel renowned for its’ environmental efforts. The hotel is ISO 14001 certified certified (which is given to enterprises that have a high-quality environmental managing system for organizational performance), has launched plastic free initiatives in partnership with WWF, where possible is powered by renewable energy and is taking great strides to reduce water consumption and reduce the use of chemicals. Even though access to water is not an issue in Norway compared to other parts of the world, this hotel is conscious of the energy consumed for heating, and chemicals required for purification, so reduction makes up part of their overall environmental policy. In addition to this they provide sustainable, organic, fair trade food, and only use sustainably produced palm oil. Your hosts also encourages guests to eat less meat and substitutes this for plant based alternatives.
At the Reindeer Ranch Sámi way of life and living in harmony with nature is at the heart of all their activities. All of the buildings are heated by geothermal energy, this is obtained through a multi-hundred-meter-long heat collection pipeline embedded in Lake Peerajärvi, which they are located by. The placement of the buildings respects the landscape and is sensitive to nature, even the frame of the buildings is timber, which has been scientifically proven to have a lowering effect on blood pressure and stress. Within the glass igloos travelers are encouraged to use water and heating in a sustainable way, and recycling options are provided for any waste. In winter, they take customers to the fell to get to know reindeer husbandry with a sledge behind the snowmobile, which produces smaller carbon footprint per customer than each driving their own snowmobile. They also do not permit snowmobile safaris in the wilderness area.
We believe that good ethics start at home, so we have applied a Green Office Policy which outlines the best practices for working in our offices and home offices to ensure a high standard of environmental sustainability. This applies to all aspects of our working environment but includes detailed policies and instructions on how to reduce waste, paper, plastic, energy, water and how we can avoid unnecessary transportation. It also encourages the use of local suppliers. We encourage an open dialogue to continually assess our working practices and how we can strive to make improvements.
PeopleAt the heart of this tour is a visit to Sami Reindeer Ranch, run by a 12th generation reindeer herder. Very few Sámi people today are full-time reindeer herders, and your host is one of those few. His way of life echoes the life his ancestors lived here for 500 years. They are an original Sámi reindeer farm; thus socio-cultural sustainability and the preservation of traditions are a built-in feature, which is reflected in the languages spoken (Sami along with Finnish), to the architectural design of the buildings i.e. model of the buildings is taken from a traditional Sámi hut. As guests to the ranch, travelers are integrated into the life of a herder and get to experience this unique traditional way of life.
Any additional labour at the ranch is sourced locally, and permanent labour is preferred to ensure that employment is sustainable and fair to all. The same ethos is reflected in local suppliers and local services recommended.
We are a small, family run business with our headquarters in Norway. As a Nordic destination specialist we ensure that all of our outbound sales staff are Nordic in nationality, this not only provides our travelers with the expertise required to design an enriching experience, but it also ensures that we are providing employment opportunities for local people. Our employees are all paid above the living wage minimum, with additional financial benefits in place to create a fair working place for all. We also recognise the importance of creating employment opportunities for underrepresented populations, and as such over 50% of our management team are female. In addition to this we are proud to partner with education institutions and provide internship opportunities, which has led onto full time positions with our team.
