Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We know the wildlife of Liwonde very well and are wholly committed to its protection and conservation. In particular, we are keenly aware that the rich biodiversity of Liwonde was once nearly lost entirely, prior to the intervention of African Parks, and it is therefore doubly important to help to ensure that such endangerment to the wildlife here does not happen again. In particular, we recognise that Liwonde now protects nationally and internationally important populations of bush elephant, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhino and wild dog. In order to protect these species, we will never attend a sighting that your tour leader deems to be too crowded, nor will we remain at a sighting when our presence is causing the animal to act unnaturally or to be distressed. If an animal chooses to move away from us during a sighting, we will not pursue it, and we will never drive offroad in an ecologically sensitive area. This itinerary includes several night drives - we will never spotlight a diurnal animal, nor will we spotlight a young, injured or otherwise distressed animal.

Malawi is fortunate to rarely suffer from severe drought. However, in all savanna areas we ask that clients are conscious of the impact of their water usage on the local environment. With this in mind, we kindly ask clients to consider limiting any superfluous use of water (e.g. long showers).

It is vital that ecotourism delivers genuine and tangible benefits for local people and the communities of which they are a part - after all, the wildlife and ecosystems we travel so far to enjoy are not ours, but rather belong to these very communities. By delivering these benefits, ecotourism allows local people to attach value to vulnerable wildlife and ecosystems, better incentivising the preservation of these areas and the animals that rely on them. With this in mind, we insist that local suppliers employ local people and offer them a fair deal in doing so. As such, client should expect that, throughout this tour, cooks, guides, drivers, housekeeping staff and most other salaried employees are Malawian.

We encourage guests to be open to and respectful of local people, their traditions and their culture during this tour. This extends to dressing appropriately, conducting oneself politely and conscientiously and being forgiving if standards of service and not always as quite as high as they might be elsewhere in the world. We also ask that clients refrain from taking photographs on anyone without their consent.
