PlanetThis itinerary has been designed to not only showcase the best of Norway, but to highlight some of the beautiful regions which are accessible by public transport, and to keep bus driving to a minimum. This includes the famous Flåm railway, which is powered by the Kjosfossen waterfall, one of the iconic stops on route.
Your journey along the iconic Norwegian coast line comprises a large element of this tour. Traditionally the company Hurtigruten had exclusive access to this route, but in 2017 the Norwegian government ended their 130 year monopoly by granting Havila access and allowing them to also take travelers along the coastline. Traditionally the ships on this route were powered by fossil fuels, however, the new Havila ships are fitted with batteries (the largest ship battery pack in the world), and are able to partly run on renewable hydroelectric power. Not only will the lack of noise and emissions improve the tourist experience and disruption to the environment, but the approach is essential to meet the strict zero emissions regulations for the fjord region to be introduced by the Norwegian government later this decade. We are proud to partner with Havila for this journey, and welcome their new, green ships.
All of the accommodations have been hand selected for their ties to the local community, and for their environmental credentials. One example is our support of Nordic Choice hotels, which are famous for their efforts in sustainability. The accommodation is ISO 14001 certified (which is given to enterprises that have a high-quality environmental managing system for organizational performance), has launched plastic free initiatives in partnership with WWF, where possible is powered by renewable energy and are taking great strides to reduce water consumption and reduce the use of chemicals. Even though access to water is not an issue in Nordic countries compared to other parts of the world, this hotel is conscious of the energy consumed for heating, and chemicals required for purification, so reduction makes up part of their overall environmental policy. In addition to this they provide sustainable, organic, fair trade food, and only use sustainably produced palm oil. Your hosts also encourages guests to eat less meat and substitute this for plant based alternatives.
PeopleWe have built-in plenty of free time into this itinerary so that our clients can soak up some of the cultural significance of the regions, and learn about the rich history of the country. Your journey up the Norwegian coastline will take you to the heartland of the Sami people, the only indigenous people of Europe. The ship will stop in the fishing village of Kjøllefjord, and your guides will educate you on their traditional way of life and how not only do they work in harmony with nature, but how they adapt when that environment is changing at a rapid pace.

This principal applies to the accommodations selected for this journey. For instance the charming guesthouse in Aurland, owned by the Ohnstad-Stigen family, has preserved traditions going as far back as the eighteenth century. The building, now under a preservation order from the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage, originally hosted the salmon-fishing British gentry came who to fish throughout the nineteenth century and later on, guests from near and far found their way to this idyllic fjord-side community. Their ties with the local community run deep, this can also be seen through their gastro-restaurant who work closely with local suppliers, breweries and anglers, and their staff are keen to share with their diners the food traditions of Vangsgaarden and Aurland.
