Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Lapland and North of Finland in winter can get chilly, but we use geothermal heat and 100% renewable energy in all our destinations. Our kitchen uses organic and locally sourced ingredients from nearby lakes, rivers and forests, such as wild mushroom, berries, fish and reindeer meat. Fishing, reindeer herding, and gathering berries have also been the means of sourcing food for the people in North of Finland, and this is a tradition we want to carry out in our kitchen. Our guests have a possibility to participate practically zero-emission activities such as reindeer, husky and horse rides, as well as snowshoeing. We also compensate carbon dioxide emissions that are resulted from airport transfers in the land of long distances by planting a tree for every visitor in the summer. The forests in Torassieppi absorb 12 times more carbon than it produces. We have decided not to use plastic cutlery and disposable dishes during our safaris, instead we are using Lappish Kupilka-brand dishes which are manufactured from 50% wood and 50% recycled plastic.

People

We have preserved the nearly 200-year old, original farmhouse, which dates back to 1849 and also has long traditions as a guesthouse. It used to house some of the very first travelers to Lapland and Pallastunturi fells over 100 years ago. The farmhouse nowadays serves as a small museum, and we organize guided tours around the farmhouse, telling more about the ways of life in a small, arctic village over the past centuries. Reindeer are semi-domesticated animals which have always been an integral part of the life in Lapland. Originally in Lapland reindeer were used as means of getting around. Later on reindeer husbandry became an important part of the life in Torassieppi, and this is an old tradition we are carrying on in Torassieppi with our reindeer programs. We also use locally sourced ingredients in our restaurant, which is an imporant means of creating sustainable practises and helping the local community.
