Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We recognise that Gambia protects some of the most pristine ecosystems anywhere in West Africa, on which many special and important species of mammal and bird depend. We are therefore entirely committed to the protection of these ecosystems. Most birdwatching and mammal-watching on this tour is done on foot, and we will never walk in any ecologically sensitive areas where we may do damage. We will never approach or remain at a sighting of any species where our presence is likely to be detrimental to the animal in question, or the ecosystem. We will never pursue an animal that has chosen to move away from us, nor will we remain at a sighting where we deem that the animal is injured, distressed or otherwise vulnerable.

We ask that clients demonstrate respect for the local environment by limiting their use of water, removing all refuse brought into these areas and limiting their use of single-use plastics. We ask that clients refrain from smoking throughout this tour.

People

In areas like Gambia, where ecotourism is in its infancy, it is of particular importance that visits such as this one deliver genuine benefits to local people and the communities of which they are a part. When done properly, this can help to ensure that value is attached by local communities to the ecosystems and wildlife that we have chosen to visit, which does a huge amount to secure the future of these areas. With this in mind, we insist that our suppliers employ local people and guests should expect that, throughout this tour, guides, drivers, cooks and housekeeping staff are Gambian.

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards any behaviour that is disrespectful to local people. We ask that clients are cognisant of the fact that standards of service in Gambia are likely to fall below those seen elsewhere on the continent, largely owing to the relative nascence of the tourist industry in Gambia. Clients should therefore exercise patience and politeness in all interactions with local people and direct any issues to their tour leader.
