Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We are cognisant of just how fortunate we are to be able to explore the special ecosystems of Northern Botswana, and we recognise how important these areas are to the survival of some of Africa's most iconic species. Lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and many other species depend on the areas we visit, and we are determined to protect these ecosystems, as well as the wildlife that calls them home. Included in the cost of this tour are levies and fees paid directly to local communities and the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), which are put towards the active conservation of these species in the form of anti-poaching patrols, snare removal and habitat restoration. When in these areas, we will always respect wildlife, and will never remain at a sighting, or approach a sighting, where we deem our presence may cause distress to wildlife - this applies regardless of whether we are on foot, in a vehicle or on a boat. Night drives in the Okavango are very special, but we are also careful never to spotlight injured, young or otherwise vulnerable animals.

We ask clients to be aware that whilst water levels can often be high in some locations, drought badly impacts areas like Savute and Makgadikgadi. We therefore request that clients take steps to limit their water usage, including capping the length of showers wherever possible.

People

It is imperative to our mission that ecotourism works hand in hand with local communities. When done properly, this helps to ensure that local people, and the communities of which they are a part, see value in local wildlife populations and the sensitive ecosystems of which they are a part. This, in turn, does a huge amount to secure the future of the wildlife populations we travel so far to see. Guests should therefore expect that, throughout this tour, local people are employed - be they cooks, guides, drivers or housekeeping staff. We insist that all local suppliers offer their staff a fair wage and good working conditions, and we have a zero-tolerance policy towards any behaviour we consider disrespectful to local people.

We are fully aware that gender equality is an important issue in many industries, but it is undeniable that wildlife conservation is a field dominated by white men. We therefore strongly encourage local suppliers to do more to bring women, particularly local women, into the field, and to offer employment to these women wherever possible. Our local supplier now operates Chobe Game Lodge, where the entire guiding staff are female, one of only a handful of such lodges anywhere in Africa.
