As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetThis short break to Sweden puts you in a prime position to see the Northern Lights, staying in one of Sweden’s premier ecotourism accommodations.
The Treehotel, in Swedish Lapland, consists of seven individually architecturally designed rooms that are built in the trees of the forests that make up this region. The hotel prides itself on giving you a genuine experience of being within nature, with sustainability and ecological values at its heart. The rooms have been built to blend in with the surroundings, with locally sourced construction materials and techniques used, making as little environmental impact as possible.
The rooms are built into live trees, with room to grow, without destroying them, and no trees are chopped down or damaged during construction. An eco wood floor has been chosen for each room, which doesn’t contain any chemical substances. The wood is heated to over 200 degrees, which triggers its intrinsic resistance to protect against destruction.
Each room has good insulation and underfloor heating. All electricity is supplied locally from hydroelectric power, whilst lighting consists of low-energy LED systems. There is no sewage system here. Each room has a modern, eco-friendly combustion toilet where everything is incinerated at 600 degrees, which is completely odourless and powered by green electricity. The Treehotel knows how precious water is, and how no drop can be wasted, and as such water-efficient sinks are in place in each room.
It’s imperative for the future of the hotel that they maintain long-term, sustainable tourism. The hotel aims to protect local heritage, and provide the local community with jobs, and continue to protect the environment.
PeopleBrändön Lodge and the Treehotel are both owned in partnership with locals who live on the premises. Tourism is a key part of the economy in this region, and by using hotels owned by people living in the area, we ensure that profits can be put back into the region. These hotels also employ local staff where possible, with Brändön Lodge employing people in its fantastic restaurant, where local ingredients are also prioritised, with an authentic Scandinavian breakfast included each day. Whilst the Treehotel uses local construction companies to help bring their grand visions to life. The Treehotel is owned by Britta, and her husband Kent, and the guesthouse at the hotel is her pride and joy. It is here where guests are welcomed, and where all meals are eaten. Here you will see how passionate both Britta and Kent are about the local area and their wonderfully unique, innovative and quirky accommodation.
