East Arnhem Land vacation Australia

Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

On this trip, some accommodation has limited lighting and is powered by generators that turn off at a certain time to conserve energy. For instance, we stay at camp sites operated by Lirrwi Tourism, who work with the community in the Yolngu homelands. These are semi-permanent tents with shared facilities, which mean we use minimal energy.

We also spend two nights at Bremer Island Banubanu Beach Retreat, which offers fishing, turtle watching and several other activities involving local wildlife. The resort focuses on teaching travelers about the fauna here and how important it is to conserve it. They run fishing charters and beach fishing excursions but ensure that these activities are done in a sustainable way. They have even won awards for their efforts in environmental sustainability, as well as having an advanced eco accreditation from Eco Tourism Australia.

We work with an operator in Yirrkala to develop, support and promote Yolngu tourism in Arnhem Land, by traveling with their local guides who educate our groups about the six seasons identified by the changes in plant, animal life and climatic conditions.

Community

On this trip, we enjoy two days of cultural activities with the traditional owners of the Nyinyikay Homeland. These activities could include making spears and yidaki (or didgeridoos) or collecting materials and dyes for basket making. There will also be an opportunity to witness the hunter-gatherer techniques that have fed the Yolngu for generations, as well as a chance to try some of the food that has been caught or collected. If you’re more interested in the traditional arts, the homeland also teaches traditional dance and bark painting. At the end of each day you’ll sit with the traditional owners around the fire and make the most of this unique opportunity to learn about their culture.

Due to the nature of this trip, there may be cultural sensitivities surrounding certain sites and topics. Whist we encourage you to be inquisitive, please be considerate when broaching potentially delicate topics and respect the land and its people.
