Vacation type

Tailor made vacations

This trip can be tailor made to create a unique vacation for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more individual trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments, with the flexibility to plan a trip at your own pace. Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips, with most services being provided on a private basis.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Focusing on the more remote areas of Bali allows travelers to use overland journeys rather than flights, cutting down on their carbon footprint. The most popular areas of Bali very much feel the weight of tourism, so branching out into the Eastern part of the island visiting De Klumpu and Candidasa allow travelers to avoid putting more strain on better known destinations.

The eco lodge that guests will stay in is especially committed to sustainability. Energy saving light bulbs are used all over the property, and staff are encouraged to save electricity in their day to day work. Rooms are not air conditioned to cut down on energy usage. Recycled water is used for watering plants on the property, and reusable bottles are provided on the property for guests to reduce the use of plastic water bottles. Guests are encouraged to re-use their towels and linens, and biodegradable cleaning products are used to minimize the impact to the local environment.

The Impacts of this Trip

Throughout the trip we use local guides and drivers to encourage a connection with the culture and people of Bali and Indonesia as a whole. The food tour in Candidasa has been created with a local woman to encourage development of the tourism infrastructure in the area and improve training the people of eastern Bali within the hospitality industry. Throughout the trip local guides are used, and are paid a fair wage and given continuous feedback and to continue improving.

Spending time in an authentic Balinese village connects guests to the community and encourages responsible travel, along with the cultural and responsible guest guidelines given before departure.

De Klumpu eco resort hosts guest workshops to introduce them to the local culture and sources food locally to support the community. There are also classes for local children who would like to learn traditional Balinese dance and musical instruments. The vast majority of staff are local people who have been trained in hospitality and are given free classes in English and French.

5 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Staying with the Iban tribe and seeing the orangutans in Sarawak, and Borobudur at sunset in Java. The beaches on Lombok and the Gilli Islands were gorgeous. We also saw an amazing kecak fire dance and had the best massage ever in Bali.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take time to choose an itinerary that takes in everything you want to see.
We found domestic flights were often delayed in Indonesia, so it was good to use other forms of transport too e.g. trains and boats.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, as all our guides and drivers were local people. Also we visited some very interesting places, e.g. small villages such as Candirejo, which seemed to have just started opening up to tourism. We probably wouldn't have known about these spots if traveling independently and hopefully the majority of the profits will have gone directly to the villagers who showed us around. Environmentally we didn't do so well as lots of flying and endless plastic water bottles - probably should've taken a filter...

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fantastic! It was incredible to have everything pre-arranged and all the logistics sorted out for us, so relaxing and just what we needed after a hectic wedding! It also made it possible to squeeze a huge amount in to the time we had available. The guides were all good and some exceptional - we learnt a huge amount about everyday life in the countries visited, which enhanced our experience greatly.
