Volunteer travel - what's it all about

Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Summer camp in Thailand, teaching English

For the Thai people, good English means good opportunities. The English camps are a really fun and active way of motivating and helping the children to learn.

In addition to this direct benefit, we try to ensure:

Social responsibility - before volunteers depart we provide them with a detailed information pack on the area they will be visiting. On arrival we provide Thai language and cultural training. We try to educate and encourage our volunteers to understand and respect the local cultures and customs and get involved with local communities.

Economic responsibility – for over 10 years we have been providing volunteers to help at charitable projects around the world. A UK charity has now been launched to build on this success by providing financial assistance to overseas causes as well. The organisations we work with are often struggling to fund the work they are doing so every penny raised makes a real difference.

A significant proportion of the fee that volunteers pay is spent in Thailand. We always work with locally owned Thai businesses and we employ Thai staff to support our volunteers. While volunteers are in-country, we encourage them to buy locally and support local businesses.

Environmental responsibility – one of the main negative impacts of our volunteers traveling, is the carbon dioxide created from flights. We work with a 'carbon neutral' charity to help ensure that an amount of carbon is sequestered through tree planting or the promotion of low energy technologies. While our volunteers and customers are overseas, we identify and encourage simple steps to minimise their impact on the local environment.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

There are so many to choose from, but the most memorable has to be when we visited the mainland to teach in a Thai school. The children were not used to foreigners and were really excited to see us, they had us signing autographs and posing for lots of photos!! The school had organised and practised dances for us which we really appreciated and enjoyed watching!! The snorkelling trip on Koh Tao was also brilliant!!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The only tips I could give would be to prepare yourself for the amount of traveling involved and for the heat but to just enjoy yourself!!! Oh yes, and take a VISA card for unforeseen emergencies or for booking flights and hotels out there.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I feel that this vacation greatly benefited the local people as it gave them the opportunity to learn English in a fun and interactive way, which they seemed to really enjoy. When visiting the school on the mainland it also gave the local community and parents the opportunity to learn English and mix with the English volunteers.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Overall this vacation was brilliant I had no idea what to expect before I went but I had so much fun, met lots of lovely people, learnt about a new culture and felt I was able to give something back to the community. The tour operator looked after us and were always at hand if we had any questions or queries both prior to the trip and during, they were all very kind and welcoming and helped in making it an amazing experience!
