Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

We are committed to offering low impact tours that benefit both the places and communities we visit as well as our travelers. It is important for us all to be aware of the delicate balance that exists in the variety of natural wonders you will visit. National Parks and monuments, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should and must be treated with respect.

We have created a 'Travelers' Code of Conduct' to help prepare and inform our groups of the various positive or negative effects they could have on a destination. The code includes tips on everything from handling wildlife encounters to how you can help to conserve precious natural resources. Our tour leaders will explain this code of conduct during the first night’s orientation talk and encourage you to follow it throughout the tour.

This code includes following the ‘Leave No Trace’ ethic, this is an international campaign that is designed to help us minimise the impact on the National Parks and other wilderness areas that we visit. Some key guidelines we follow include keeping to existing trails, staying in official campgrounds and disposing of all waste responsibly and recycling whatever we can.

We are proud supporters of Bay Area Wilderness Training ( a charity based in Oakland California which works to connect disadvantaged children in the local urban area with the great outdoors. Their work helps to provide these young people with life changing experiences which they can
apply to everyday life. Everyone booking with Grand American Adventures has the option to donate £1/$1/€1 to support this well-deserved charity and we will match this donation.

Whenever possible, we use local accommodation and activity providers. We also shop locally for groceries, eat in small family-run restaurants and visit local shops whenever possible. This all brings economic benefit to the local communities that we visit.

We spend a significant amount of time at various National Parks on this tour, the included entrance fees help to preserve the status and upkeep of the park on a continued and sustainable basis. Interaction with National Park Rangers helps to preserve this role as an employment opportunity for local people and future generations

Our tour leaders will educate travelers on how best to interact with the wildlife in the parks, for example advising people not to feed the animals to stop them becoming dependent on hand-outs from humans. They will also advise all groups to keep to the path to avoid upsetting the balance of nature.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Banff and a magnificent wiew from
Sulphur Mountain!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If you like long driving, short walks
and sightseeing mostly from the van,
go for it. If you expect longer hiking,
cycling and a lot of free time, just skip

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was ok, but not like I expected to be.
There was too many of that to see in
ten days, so we can not be at one place
more than a few minutes, definitely
not enough time for enjoy, for just be
outside and feel the nature. It should
be a longer trip, or a ten day trip with
less things to see, just to have enough
time for enjoy outside.
I'll give a star more for this trip just
because of our tour guide ISABEL, she
was fantastic!!!!
Waiting for Grand American Adventure to respond. TB

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Wildlife encounters:Black Bears up close. The vista of the Rockies

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Travel between some points was extensive. The Inner passage ferry trip took from 0530 hrs to 2345hrs. Travel took up at least 2 days of the trip once on the tour ie it was an 11 day tour not 13 in our opinion. Some of the hotels were poor eg Ucluelet was paticulary bad v. noisy and outside Tofino which was the attraction part of the trip ie couldn't get to Tofino under own steam. You will spend a lot of time in the bus.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

$CDN spent were in local areas. Some of the optional excursions were given by conservation minded organisers eg Bella Coona river trip. However, difficult to identify any particular conservation benefit;whale watching may have had a negative effect as there is data suggesting that whales sonar systems are damaged by constant boat traffic.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Average.Too much time traveling and not enough looking and enjoying.Felt that we were being herded too much and constantly chasing the next days activities. Several of the group (9) thought it would have benefited from one or two more days to take off the time pressure.

Hi George,

Thanks you for your comments on your recent trip. Getting feedback such as yours is invaluable as we always strive improve our product and offer memorable experiences. We have passed all comments onto the team in Canada. Travel time in parts of North America can take a large chunk of your time but with the distances to cover this is unavoidable. We just hope that the journey can enhance the experience whether that be seeing the vistas of the Rockies or spotting wildlife from the long ferry journey. Certainly the ferry journey is long but the group who have just completed the last Canada Wildlife and Vancouver Island trip saw Orcas from the ferry and when docking in Port Hardy late at night were treated to spectacular views of the Northern Lights.

In regards to lengthening the trip, this is great to hear and certainly would be great having more time. It is always a battle when developing new, and adjusting existing product to offer trips that see as much as possible within a time span that people have time off to be able to book onto. Thanks again as we really value this feedback.
