Family activity center vacation

For many families, flexibility is the key on a vacation and we have used our operational experience to offer just that. Activity centers have one base from which we offer a range of exciting, fun and educational activities that may appeal to all the family or just some. You can choose how many you do and who in the family does them. You will not be forced into a group (although there are normally other families around) and if you want free time to explore as a family our staff are there to advise what there is to see. Each activity has a stated minimum age and children must be accompanied by at least 1 parent while undertaking an activity.

Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

Our activity center on the Lake District family activity vacation is located at the head of the stunningly beautiful Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District National Park. The center offers a large range of outdoor activities and is operated in an environmentally responsible and community-friendly manner. The Centre’s management prides itself on employing local people on long-term contracts, allowing staff to stay resident in this beautiful area. All of the center’s instructors and staff are briefed on responsible travel and use of the environment, in turn passing on this message to the many customers.

The center uses only produce provided by local suppliers, thus providing only the freshest produce for its customers whilst supporting the local economy. The center has an active recycling programme, which all staff and customers are briefed in and encouraged to use. Each year the staff monitor the center’s energy consumption and investments are made in new energy-saving appliances and procedures. The ideal location in the heart of Borrowdale means that use of transport for activities can be kept to a minimum. If transport is needed local companies are used to help boost the local economy.

The center on our Lake District family activity vacation works closely with the National Trust, the National Park Authority, the local community and other nearby outdoor centers to ensure that the local area and activity sites are managed thoughtfully, with any environmental impact kept to a minimum. The center is also a key member of the Borrowdale User Group (BUG), through which they assist in reporting and informing other users about any areas of concern and implement plans to deal with any current or potential problems.

Our accommodation is situated just 5 minutes walk from the center of Keswick. Despite being owned by a small chain the hotel adopts a sound environmental policy. In this respect, recent changes have been made in the housekeeping department. In order to cut down on plastic containers being used and liquids, the hotel now uses concentrated chemicals and have re-usable containers for these.

The amount of full linen changes on stayovers has been reduced to cut down on laundry and kitchen aprons, clothes and restaurant serving clothes are washed in-house. Guests are asked to place towels in the bath if they require them to be changed otherwise they would be placed back on the towel rail to be re-used. If a bedroom is for single occupancy we always use a twin room (2 single beds so only 1 bed will be used instead of a double bed) and make sure only one set of towels are in the room.

The hotel has invested in a compressor for cardboard boxes which are then sent away to the council for recycling and all paper is put into a recycle bin in reception which is then transferred to the outside large recycling bin. There are 3 bottle bins which all bottles from the bar and restaurant are put into each day. All printer cartridges are kept and sent back to the supplier to be re-cycled. When ordering copier paper we always use recycled. The night porter turns all lights and lamps off I public areas once the guests have gone bed and then turns them back on at 7am. Housekeeping turn lights and TV`s off in rooms once they are serviced. Radiators are checked in warmer months to ensure they are turned off. The heating times are reduced in warmer months.

Community

The hotel endeavours to employ local people wherever possible but admits that it is difficult to attract residents into the lower-paid jobs such as waiting and kitchen portering. Nevertheless, job vacancies are always advertised in local papers and the local jobcenter first, if no suitable employee is found then the hotel broadens the advertising.

The hotel strives to support local businesses by using only local tradesmen for any building and maintenance issues. With being in a chain of hotels, most of the contractors are signed to the company for the Lake District and the Blackpool hotels and are all local.

All the food is supplied from the North West ranging between Keswick and Blackpool (Head Office suppliers) and the head chef endeavours to use local ingredients where possible. As a chain, the hotel raises thousands of pounds every year through events for many different charities and have provided many vouchers for various fundraising events.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Ghyll scrambling down Stoneycroft ghyll - going head first down a waterfall down the hillside - incredible!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take plenty of changes of clothes and towels as you will get wet. Try everything - you'll be amazed what you can do even if you've never tried it before. And this is a fantastic vacation for parents and children to try things together where you're all out of your comfort zone.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. Everything we did was directly with local providers. The outdoor activities team were very knowledgeable about the area so we learned lots about the history of the place, and the impact of their work. They were also great at educating the children (and adults) about nature and doing things naturally which we have carried with us.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was truly amazing and we will definitely be going again.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Watching my son abseil without any sign of fear

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

1- that there is a half day free
2- that it is possible to change the activities if you don't like them
3 - that warm over clothes are provided for the gyll scrambling (not really mentioned in the trip details)
4 - book table for dinner in the restaurant at latest in the morning if eating in the hotel
5 - bring more clothes than you think you will need

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I suppose it helped support local employment

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very enjoyable and offered both something for adults and children. Although you were with a group for activities you could still do your own thing in the evening which meant that it still felt like an independent vacation.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We thoroughly enjoyed it all - the walking and scenery was spectacular and the activities just pitched right for both adults and children. The trip was made even more enjoyable by the expertise, knowledge and personalities of the guides who were great fun.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Eat at Casa Bella as they are very welcoming and the food was good.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Certainly apart from our travel the impact was probably minimal. The guides were local and the activities focused on a small area. We stayed at a very good local hotel and of course remained in the UK.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was great, the breakfast at the hotel was fabulous and set us all up for the day, the activities were exciting and the guides lovely. We would thoroughly recommend it for an active break.
