We also encourage travelers to take individual steps to help promote responsible travel and suggest bringing your own water bottle to refill along the way. We recommend at least a 1.5 litre capacity. The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to the water in bottles, the production of a one litre plastic bottle requires two litres of water and 200ml of oil. A large proportion end up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and natural environments.

This trip uses a variety of transportation options, including several public transit services such as buses, trains, taxis and metro systems. In addition, the overnight train ride is a classic Russian experience not to be missed. It’s not only one of the best ways to explore the country and the daily lives of people in various regions, but it also minimizes our carbon footprint.

The Impacts of this Trip

This trip covers a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time to provide a diverse overview of Russian cuisine. Take in the highlights of St. Petersburg and Moscow while gaining an insight into the historical development of classic Russian fare and the legacy of empire, as well as post-Soviet foodie traditions. In Saint Petersburg, the group will have a chance to look behind its opulent façade whilst visiting a local family and sharing lunch with them.

A rural escape to Suzdal allows a storybook wander through ancient cottage-style architecture, culminating in a visit to the home of a renowned local cook and her garden. Harvest produce from the land and learn to make the iconic borscht in a hands-on cooking class.

An overnight train journey to the East takes you through the Russian countryside to Kazan. As a region that is somewhat independent from the rest of Russia, the culture and food here has its own distinct flavour. During your walking tour you’ll stop in at a standard Soviet-style canteen where you can try some Tatar staples. This is a fantastic place to eat like a local and sample a variety of dishes such as soups, salads, local pies, laghman (pulled noodles with meat and vegetables) and, of course, chak-chak. A regional specialty of small balls of deep-fried, unleavened dough pressed together to form a dome or tower, then smothered with honey and left to harden – this dish is a point of pride in Tatarstan.

The next afternoon visits a local Tatar family offering a unique insight into everyday life over traditional home cooked plates. This food adventure will surprise and delight anyone looking to learn more about the varied cuisines of Russia and the regional and ethnic specialties it has to offer.

You are accompanied by a multi-lingual leader for the duration of the tour who will be able to help you understand more about the realities of living and traveling in Russia, as well as help to facilitate your interaction with locals along the way. The local guides who take you on excursions and walking tours in each of the places we visit are passionate about their country and allow you to get a real insight into places significant to the history, culture and development of the nation.

You will also meet local cooks, market vendors and host families who will share their stories of living, cooking and eating in Russia. Our focus on contracting with small businesses, such as locally owned accommodation and restaurants, allows travelers to experience the ‘real’ Russia while contributing to the local economy.

When taking trains, we travel 2nd or 3rd class (kupe or platzkart) which is the way the majority of locals travel – this gives us maximum chance to meet and share stories, food, games and the journey with local travelers.
