Small group cultural tours

Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travelers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are traveling alone or with friends it's good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travelers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as experiencing new cultures.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

This 43 day adventure through the best of southeast Asia uses mainly local transport including buses and trains. This is the best way to ensure our impact on the environment is low and road congestion kept to a minimum - there are no coaches used here!

This tour visits various UNESCO World Heritage Sites including temples, sacred sites, sites of natural beauty such as Halong Bay and National Parks. Customers are advised to be respectful of these areas, not to walk on ruins and keep to marked paths, not to leave behind litter or waste and not to take keepsakes from the sites such as stones. The entrance cost for Angkor Wat is included on this tour, with the money going back into the preservation of the religious site. In Hoi An customers are encouraged to purchase the ancient town ticket, which allows entrance into the five most popular and ancient sites. The ticket fee in turn goes back into the preservation of these sites as well as some needed restoration.

Throughout this tour there is the opportunity to explore the area by bike or on foot, further limiting our carbon footprint and impact on the environment. For example in Hoi An there are various bike rental companies and you can take the day to cycle the old town or down to the beach. We aim to use accommodation in central locations meaning you can walk to restaurants and sites. On foot is the best way to experience a city or town and our tour leaders take you on a walking orientation tour of each location we visit.

The Impacts of this Trip

This tour uses a mixture of small hotels and guesthouses, aiming where possible to use locally owned accommodation and to support family businesses. In the Mekong Delta we stay in various homestays, supporting the local villagers and exposing customers to the most authentic experience possible. Customers are encouraged to learn a few words so that interaction between traveler and local is as best and respectful as it can be. During our stay in the Mekong Delta we will also visit various markets and villages where customers are encouraged to purchase locals crafts and food.

During the pre departure meeting all customers are briefed on temple etiquette and how to travel respectfully through this corner of the world.

Our tour leaders always recommend local restaurants and cafes and avoid international chains in the big cities. Asia is home to some of the best street food in the world and customers are encouraged to support local vendors. It is also the best way to try authentic meals.

While in Cambodia, this tour includes visits to both the Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum. These highlight the atrocious events that occured in Cambodia and educating travelers about these events is the best way to show respect to the country. We believe education is the best way of preventing events such as these from occuring again. The entrance fees for these sites mean there is money going back into preserving them for generations to come.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

So many! Snorkelling for the first time in Nha Trang (and second time in Ko Phi Phi!) was fantastic, jungle trekking in both Thailand and Malaysia was awesome and handling a tiger cub in Thailand was the cutest thing in the world.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Try new experiences! Mine included motorbiking, tubing and chilli frog porridge.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. All the local guides we used were awesome and deserved our money and tips. The one improvement I would suggest is a local tour leader.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Outstanding - varied, educational and stacks of fun.

Read the operator's response here:

We are delighted that you enjoyed your tour in Southeast Asia. It really is a fabulous part of the world and it is great to hear when people enjoy themselves there as much as we do.

We would like to add, however, for anyone reading this and is concerned about the handling of tiger cubs due to the conditions in which these animals are kept, that this is not an option included in any of our itineraries in the region. However, because our tours have free time in cities where this is possible, and because this remains a popular activity with travelers, we cannot prevent clients on our tours who want to visit these places in their own time.

Once again we are very grateful for your comments and hope you'll choose to visit other parts of the world and really get to learn about the local culture and the people that live there with us in the future.

Kind regards.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

There were so many highlights to this vacation which covered so many countries, there are a few of the memorable ones, overcoming culture shock in Hanoi, having a suit made in Hoi An home to 400 tailors, touring the Mekong river on a longboat, visiting the museum in Phnom Penh, seeing the sun rise over Angkor Wat. Visiting the floating villages on Tonle Sap asia's largest fresh water lake near Siam Reap. Staying in Luang Prabang the beautiful Lao city on the Mekong. Staying the night in a hilltribe village in northern Thailand, snorkling on the coral reefs around Ko Phi Phi, 4x4 driving, drinking tea in a tea plantation in the Cameron highlands. Exploring great cities like KL and Singapore

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Have a sense of adventure and realise that Asia is different in so many ways to our western way of life.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I am not sure what you mean by minimized impacts on the environment, I hope that local people benefited from our tour but I cannot be sure!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fantastic, but tough going at times!
