Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

We aim to minimise our impact on the environment and give as much back as possible to the communities we work in. All operations for this tour are done by locally owned companies, a fact we pride ourselves on. Hotels used are all locally owned and we try to choose where possible hotels which hold the same values and understand their responsibilities to the local environment as we do.

In our pre departure information pack, and throughout the orientation on site, we help you to minimise your carbon footprint on your tour, and help protect the diverse environments which we visit on this tour. This information includes simple advice on waste disposal.

We really work hard to keep all our operations green. All our worldwide offices currently run on 90% green energy (we are working towards 100%) from hydro electric, wind and solar power. Being web based, we are close to becoming a paperless environment, brochure prints are at a minimum (and printed on a requirement basis) and all pre departure information is emailed. We use energy saving bulbs in our work centers, and recycle all our waste.

The Impacts of this Trip

Our trips source as much as possible from the local community. Whether it be our knowledgeable local guides, locally produced meals or the transport on tour, we do not use imported goods when local produce is available.

By booking your tour with us, you will be making a real impact on the community you are visiting. We can also assist you if you wish to visit community projects in order to get a lot more out of your trip. Most importantly a percentage of the funds generated from your tour (10%) will go back to our charities and assist us in supporting the next generation and the environment they live in.

This trip directly makes a difference to the Falkland Islandís local economy, as there are very few industries on the island and little contact with the outside world. Food and other commodities are sourced locally and all of the hotels and guided services are run locally which keeps the proceeds in the Islands and not leaking out to the mainland or other countries. Unlike in other countries, tour prices go pretty much direct to the communities and doesnít exchange several hands like other places in the world.

We currently work with 3 different charities, giving us a broad spectrum and diversifying where our funds go. We work with Project Peru in the UK who run an orphanage in Zapallal in the shanty town outskirts of Lima, ANIA in Peru which is a high profile Peruvian NGO which works with children and helps to teach them about their local environment and how to manage it affectively, and GVI Foundation in Australia which works on several development projects in Latin America and around the world. We help these charities by fundraising treks, through donations as a company and through our clients and also through many of our customers who volunteer their time and expertise. These charities are close to our core of supporting the environment and children in needs.

2 Reviews of Falkland Islands vacation

5 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The penguins, the people were friendly and helpful and ironically the food was delicious.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Go only during the summer and prepare for the unexpected as far as weather is concerned. Nobody there is ever in a hurry but they seem to always get everything done... Take hiking boots (or some kind of water proof footwear) not just sneakers even if you aren't hiking... It can be a strenuous or as laid back as you want it to be.. Their idea of not far (just over the hill) could be several miles. Also if you book your airlines make sure that you book from Santiago to the Falklands not from Punta Arenus.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Benefited the locals in everywhere we stayed was privately owned and their lively hood. Like a large bed and breakfast in the states.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Everything was memorable from the penguins on the Falkland Islands to the turtles on Ascension Island. Learning about the very different cultures in these places was something life changing and the welcome we received everywhere was the best I have ever known.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The flight from Santiago is very long (14 hours) and as LANChile won't let you book single flights and so charge for return it is better to travel both ways by Airbridge from Brize Norton. This does away with the budget Iberia flight from Heathrow to Madrid and the horrors of Madrid airport

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

These islands all need tourism to boost the economy and it is simply a matter of joining in with their ways of life, so nothing special is being built for tourists, but there is plenty of room, and plenty to see and do. The Falklands are suffering because Argentina makes it hard for cruise ships to visit Stanley which means others must visit instead. On Ascension Island we were able to volunteer alongside of conservationists working to save the endangered endemic ferns.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The best in my life, and the operator, via Responsible Travel did a lot to make it all happen
