Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Throughout certain legs of this trip we, of course, use bicycles to get between points and take in scenic loops. However, when traveling the longer distances through Myanmar, we opt for more environmental friendly 15-25 seat coaches that use less fuel and therefore emit less carbon then the 40-50 seaters.

A large, reusable water container is carried on the vehicle and clients can regularly refill their water bottles throughout the trip. This helps to significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastic purchased.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

Throughout the majority of this trip we use bicycles to get between points and take in scenic loops. Cycling vacations are a relatively sustainable way to travel as they have less negative impact on the local infrastructure, environment and people while encouraging positive interaction with local people. We cycle on routes that are removed from mass tourism, creating less pollution, noise and traffic. When using motorised transport we work with small, locally owned transport companies.

People

Enjoying local, Burmese cuisine is an opportunity to try something different, but to also support the local economy. For this reason we have included 9 lunches where clients can try the local food. The local Tour Leaders make recommendations of dishes to try at locally-run, family-owned restaurants, which also adds an extra enjoyment to your unique tour.

Inle Lake is a place that is renowned for its traditional craftspeople, and our tour of Burma takes you to see the silversmiths, weavers, boat-builders and cheroot-rollers to learn how the locals are plying their trades still using traditional methods. Here there is the option to donate or purchase products right at the source, putting money directly into the pockets of local people and helping to keep these age-old trades alive.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.

In particular the Baroque town of Ragusa gives us the opportunity to experience and to help preserve the centuries-old traditions in the pastry shops that use local crops such as almonds, walnuts, pistachios, honey and oranges.

One of the reasons we prefer to use local tour leaders is so they can give a real insight into the culture and history of their home country by sharing their own stories and experiences. In addition we are supporting them financially through employment, as well as the other members of staff of our in-country partners.
