Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Kenya mountain biking vacation, 9 days

We aim to reveal the ‘real’ Africa to our customers. Our journey tries to stay off the beaten track as we fully believe in preserving the natural African beauty. Environment conservation being the focus, we have tailored this safari as an initiative towards minimizing noise which scares away wild animals, air pollution and overcrowding at conservation areas that many a times lead to destruction of fragile plants. This safari takes routes that vehicles cannot use thus exposing our clients to more beautiful scenery.

At our Camp in Maji Moto, we don’t have running water from the taps nor electricity. Water is fetched by our local staff from a borehole in the nearby village and a filled into shower buckets whenever a guests wants to take a bathe. We use solar panel to trap solar energy which is used for charging phones, torches and cameras for the guests.

During safari at Mara and Maji Moto we camp in temporary tents that are owned and/or operated by the local Maasai people. The camps are eco – friendly as they can be demolished at anytime. The entry fees paid per visitor at Masai Mara Reserve partly goes to the conservation of the reserve while the other goes directly to the community. In this way the local communities earn from their own natural resources in which they have contributed in preserving.

Africa is our passion and we want to pass on all our knowledge and experiences gained over the years to our clients. To achieve this we ensured that all our guides and their support team on this trip are local tribal Masai people with great knowledge about the area, its flora and fauna, culture and even the routes used. We are committed to take our customers closer to nature and culture without harming any of them and to provide deep and authentic experience to all our travelers.

Maji Moto Eco Camp: The camp is a joint venture between us and a local Masai community. Our key aims are to help the local community through creating job opportunities and at the same time encourage young tribesmen to preserve and nurture their culture. The camp has been designed to be part of the environment and blend in naturally.

Our Camp has embraced local architecture. It was built with the help of Masai women and only local materials were used (sticks, grass, cow dung, stones). From the dining areas to showers and toilets everything is in local style. The supplies of the camp are also local and locally bought from a near by town.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The trip gave us so many memorable moments. The surprise of seeing our Masai guide Sankale for the first time and the sense of humor of our driver Hassan. The discoveries of the way of life of the rural Kenyans, the scenery and of course the animals of which we say so many. Children waving, people smiling and the gracious service of everyone in every lodge or camp was endearing. Maji Moto was a favorite with its calm and pleasant location and their staff plus learning more about the Masai culture. In all every tented camp was an incredible surprise. I am vegetarian and I ended up eating very well as well.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The accommodations in the comfort class were beyond what I was expecting. Prepare yourself for long transfers due to the conditions of the roads and hope
you have a great driver like Hassan and a LandRover. So be prepared in general for the roads. The biking distances were maybe less than I thought but were
adequate. The conditions of the bikes were functional but some time was wasted in on the road reparations. Be prepared for dirt and dust. don't forget binoculars and your sense of humor.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I hope it benefited the local people and I did like in the lodges a central tipping pot that was distributed to everyone. The lodges or camps were very environmentally friendly with solar heating, etc. My impression is that the parks are doing their best for conversation and my hopes are that they will continue in their policies to protect all the animals. I only wish that Kenya would recycle both the PET bottles and seek to outlay plastic bags which was sad to see.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Great vacation with a great group especially Sankale and Hassan, both always smiling and calm and are just wonderful people. We were so lucky to have them and their desire to show us their country and their nature. Kenya was a wonderful surprise in so many ways and I now feel an attachment to the people
of this fine country and of course still feel amazed to have seen so many animals in their natural environment.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

My family really loved cycling with the Masai guides through remote parts of the Kenyan bush, learning about the human and natural environment, spotting animals, visiting villages and camping with the Masai at night.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

I would recommend taking a few things to aid the cycling - for example special cycle gloves, proper water bottles, even padded cycle shorts - as it is a pretty bumpy ride in some places. One might even invest in a gel saddle!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes indeed - cycling was a wonderful way to reach remote areas - it benefited the Masai who were accompanying us and camping with us. In the final two days we stayed in a lodge in the Masai Mara. This was comfortable and enjoyable but when they laid on 'masai dancing' at night we realised how much more authentic our previous experience had been when we had long conversations round the camp fire with the Masai villagers.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a great experience and also a wonderful example of family bonding. I had done something like this before which was the reason I knew about it - but my children and husband were pretty dubious at the prospect. In the end they absolutely loved the whole thing and fell in love with the Masai guides.
