Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

A well-balanced connection with nature is the foundation of all our operations. Thus considering the environment constitutes an essential part of our business philosophy and is also of utmost importance to the success of the whole operation. The basic business idea of our company is to offer the tourist a range of products which are in concordance with Finnish nature. The adequacy of environmental activities is regularly assessed by means of collecting customer feedback and studying key parameters.

The main objective of this trip is to explore the wild taiga forests of Finland, which is best done in the versatile national parks, nature reserves and other protected areas in Finland. These areas offer many services for hikers and at the same time ensure the sustainable usage of the land.
With the tour information package visitors receive sufficient information on Finnish everyman's rights to understand how to behave in the nature.

The Finnish Forest and Park Service encourages hikers to help keep the Finnish countryside free of litter, and to recycle wastes whenever possible. Visitors are also informed about the “hiking without littering”, in other words hikers are asked to look after their own wastes, according to the principle that if you can manage to bring something into the forest, you can also manage to take it out again

When the clients are participating in the (optional) wildlife watching excursions, they get to know the wildlife of the area. This leads to a better understanding and therefore creates sufficient basis for protecting the environment, following the motto: “We protect only what we know".

This tour requires a hire car. We recommend visitors to choose a low-emission car and as appropriate as possible of size, not too big one. We also encourage visitors to drive as smoothly and eco-friendly as possible, to avoid idle and unnecessary driving.

Community

The trip is contributing mainly in economical means to the local community as the accommodations are run by local businesses. Therefore the visitors are also getting involved in the traditional activities of the locals. Moreover the route includes many spots which have long been honoured as traditional sites by local people, such as Juminkeko – the information center for the Finnish national epic Kalevala and Karelian culture or the Värikalliot rock paintings in Hossa, which are the oldest rock paintings in northern Finland. The interest of visitors supported the conservation and up keeping of these spots.

Also traditional reindeer husbandry is supported by this trip as the arrangements of visiting a reindeer farm offers a new source of income to the reindeer herders and prevent them from quitting this traditional work.

Our company does not own any hotel, restaurant or buses for transportation. We buy all these services from the local operators. On guided tours the guides are locals for as much as possible. So the money which we get from the clients goes straight for the local companies and the guides.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Finland is such a beautiful peacefully country. We did so much yet felt totally relaxed and switched off completely. Loved all of it including Hossa National
Park, the Husky Farm Visit and especially the Bear Safari. The local independent accommodation is so beautiful, particularly the farm at Arola.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Added an extra night at Kuopio which was well worth it not to drive to our first stop as soon a s we arrived.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It’s great that the Husky Farm and Bear Safaris are small scale. You get a much better personal experience and and feel that this is beneficial to the local
rural areas. They also have a vested interest as they are working and living in that immediate area and passionate about the environment rather than just
making money. Also, much preferred the accommodation at the small independent cabins and farms, the hotels where good but not as much of an
experience and lovely home cooked meals.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Finland will stay with me for a long time and would love to return. Exceeded my expectations.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The night in the bear hide and the two days in Oulu bird watching.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Ask to stay in visitor center hotel for one of the nights in the Oulu area as this is the best bird watching we found

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Somewhat

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very good but perhaps less driving and more time in the wild places would be nice. Rovaniemi is pretty awful. I would stay an extra night by the lake instead

The bear watching and having a close encounter with a white-tailed eagle.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Bring along a good mosquito repellent. Try the Finnish Fazer chocolate - it is
really excellent!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It was one of our favourite aspects of this vacation to meet so many local people
and to learn of their lives. The cottages we stayed in were mostly all locally
owned and managed so the farmers and fishermen who own them benefited directly.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent. We very much liked the mixture of all the accommodations and we felt
we really got a flavour of Finland.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing bears at Arola Farm. The bears appeared straight-away and were very close.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Finland is full of trees. Don't expect to see too much else unless you are at the coast or book animal viewing sessions at hides.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In part. The summer season in Finland is short and we were the only visitors in some places.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We saw bears and wolverines but not wolves. Helsinki was good with broad streets and plenty of green spaces. Three stars covers it. Good for seekers of solitude.
