Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

On this tour you will visit various bird sanctuaries and national parks, all of which are protected and many of which do not normally benefit from visits from mainstream tourism. The entrance fees we pay to enter these go directly to sustaining them.

The Tobago Forest Reserve is the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere, with plantation owners realising as early as 1765 that they should stop cutting down the forest. Since then 14,000 acres of central Tobago were designated a protected Crown Reserve.

You will visit Little Tobago and there is an opportunity to snorkel at Angel Reef on the way. However, you will be instructed not to walk on the reef, not to touch or collect pieces of coral and to avoid disturbing the marine life. Little Tobago itself is a protected bird sanctuary and an important breeding site for many seabirds such as the Red-billed Tropicbirds. You will be guided whilst on Little Tobago and expected to follow a code of conduct so as to minimize the environmental impact by not approaching too close to the nesting birds, staying on designated paths and ensuring that litter is not dropped anywhere.

Both hotels we have chosen for this tour are locally owned and managed with a great deal of love and attention and it shows! Kariwak Village is a small haven of tropical calm and quiet set in lovely gardens, yet close to local bars and restaurants. It is the philosophy behind Kariwak that distinguishes it among Tobago hotels, from its long-standing environmentally friendly policies and a restaurant that uses the freshest ingredients available from the markets, the fishermen and the organic salad and herbs from its own garden, to the programme of holistic activities including yoga and tai chi that it offers. Then at the other end of the island we have Blue Waters Inn, which has been owned by the same local family for generations and is tucked away in its own secluded bay amongst 46 acres of lush tropical grounds. Although both of these hotels have excellent restaurants, we have only included breakfasts on this tour so that you have the opportunity to eat out and interact with the local communities.

On the various trips, you will be accompanied by well-trained and experienced local guides, who are familiar with their environment and are responsible for protecting it, offering advice on how to preserve the delicate balance of nature. They are also of course, best placed to know where to find all the best that the island has to offer and are passionate about preserving their island for future generations.

1 Reviews of Tobago tailor made vacation, culture, nature & birds

4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed on 28 Jan 2017 by

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Tobago itself...a laid back place and very relaxing and hassle free. Fabulous unspoilt beaches (even though I am not really a beach person).

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Expect to wind down and take things slowly. Be prepared to pay more for food in restaurants, than you might in the UK

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

To an extent.....We used local taxis and guides, the places we stayed were locally owned and run and we ate in local restaurants so yes I felt it benefited local people. We also did some guided bird watching in the reserves.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Good - we were unlucky with the weather but that's the way it goes sometimes.
