Budget travel advice

The following advice on how to successfully travel on a budget comes from Danniell Saunders, director at our supplier and budget vacation specialist, Encounters Travel:
“It’s a balancing act between having a trip that is still enjoyable and finding a genuine budget where you don’t just pay for everything later. Our best advice is to make sure you check the itinerary and inclusions very carefully. A lot of companies will offer very little with inclusions on a budget trip and you especially need to make sure you know up front what extras you need to pay for locally.”
“It helps if the distances between places are not huge; this helps cut down on transport costs. Also, pick a destination with a vibrant cultural history, as this is something that you don’t have to pay for.”
“Make sure you have enough money once you’re in a country as there is no point being somewhere if you can’t afford to enjoy it. You also need to keep an open mind as often you might be staying in accommodation or traveling in transport that you aren’t used to.”
The following tips on how to have a successful budget tour comes from Tom Smith, from our supplier, Intrepid Travel:

“Eat street food, or in places which are full of locals. Carry a re-usable water bottle. Take public transport. And ask local people as many questions as possible.”

“Take your time. The more time you have to do the trip in, the less likely it is that you’ll have to take the quicker option for transport, which is often more expensive.”
“Having a local guide means that you’ve got a wealth of local knowledge right there in front of you. They’ll know the most cost-effective places to eat, drink or buy souvenirs.”

Budget travel advice

At Responsible Travel, we think the best people to advise our travelers are often... other travelers. They always return from our tours with packing tips, weather reports, ideas about what to do - and opinions about what not to.

We have selected some of the most useful budget travel tips that our guests have provided over the years to help you make the very most of your vacation - and the space inside your suitcase.
"If you are going to do it just relax and enjoy the experience. Yes you get a bit dirty and your clothes aren't as clean as you normally would wear them but so what. Everyone is in the same boat. I'm so glad we explored Southern Africa this way." – John Munroe on a Southern Africa budget vacation
"The price is actually very good compared to most safari packages and if you don't need absolute luxury then def book the mobile tented camp as a 'roughing it' alternative although it’s hardly roughing it as a soft thick mattress in the tent makes for a v comfy night and the food is the same as the main camp." – Alex Allen on a budget camping safari in Kenya
"Change money into the local currency – this will allow you to buy food from the bakeries and markets used by Cuban people. Not only is this MUCH cheaper than the tourist shops and restaurants, but it helps you distribute your vacation spending across a wider range of the population." – Helen Peake on a budget vacation in Cuba
"Don't be afraid to go just because you're slightly older, as a 59 year old I was very much ‘part of the crowd." – Alan Macdonald on a budget vacation in Cambodia
"It was the perfect way for me as a single female to find my feet in a new country and assess how safe I felt. It was also a very relaxing way to travel as everything is arranged for you so there is no decision-making about where to stay, eat, go and no need to worry about missing out on important places to see." – Amanda Heseltine on a budget vacation in Cambodia
