Last minute vacation tips

TRAVEL INSURANCE & JABS

Do I need a vaccination?

If you are spoiled for choice when it comes to destinations, one of the best last minute vacation tips you can get is to check which vaccinations you need, and how far in advance of your travel you need to get them. If you want to go very last minute, for example, and arenít already up to date with jabs, vaccination free zones might be more practical. Here are some of our top destinations and their vaccination recommendations and malaria risk. For more details see the NHS website, Fit for Travel.
Country Minimum vaccinations /medication recommended *
India Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid
Sub Saharan Africa Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus and Malaria medication in certain areas
China Hepatitis A, Risk of malaria in Yunnan Province and Hainan Island.
Thailand Hepatitis A, Tetanus
Morocco Hepatitis A, Typhoid
Burma Diphtheria, Hepatitis A; Tetanus, Typhoid
Cambodia Hepatitis A, Tetanus; Typhoid
Ecuador Hepatitis A, Typhoid and, in some places, Yellow Fever (not the Galapagos)
Peru Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid and, in some areas, Yellow Fever
Vaccination Time needed before travel
Yellow fever 10 days
Hepatitis A 2 weeks is ideal but anytime okay
Tetanus Up to the day before
Typhoid 7- 10 days
Diphtheria Up to the day before

*Other vaccinations may be recommended for specific regions. Always check with your doctor or Fit for Travel for more details.

Yellow fever

Under regulations set out by the World Health Organisation, anyone traveling to a country or area where yellow fever is prevalent must have an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Similarly, if you have travelled recently to one of these countries, you need to declare that on arrival in other countries, using your certificate. For more details on affected countries, see Fit for Travel.

Do I need insurance?

One of our top last minute vacation tips is that if you are an EU citizen, a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will allow you to access public healthcare at a reduced cost in other EU countries, or sometimes for free. Extra insurance is always worth the money, however, as it can also include services such as emergency repatriation, as well as compensation for lost or stolen items.

Getting travel insurance online these days is very straightforward, and usually done with the press of a few buttons. As long as you arenít over a certain age, or had any medical complications, in which case, some insurance companies can be more of a pain in the proverbial than your vaccinations were. At Responsible Travel we have teamed up with Columbus Direct to create a bespoke travel insurance product where you can not only get a discount but also donate money to charity. The charity will be one of the charities Responsible Travel supports (as nominated by our staff). Read more about our charity commitments here. There is a discount on normal Columbus rates to play with. You can choose between taking a 15 percent discount, giving 20 percent to charity, or go 50-50, gaining a 10 percent discount and giving 10 percent to charity. Click here for more details.
