BEST TIME TO GO ON A PAINTING HOLIDAY

Light and shade add depth and scope to a painter’s palette, so spring and autumn are the best seasons to expand your artistic horizons.
Although parched summers in southern Europe and Morocco can dry paint as soon as it touches the canvas, you can still enjoy a painting vacation beneath the canopy of sun-dappled orchards or a well-placed beach parasol. In Scotland’s Inner and Outer Hebrides, meanwhile, painting cruises depart when the weather warms up during July and August. In the main, the best time to go on a painting vacation is in spring or autumn. This is when rural regions come to life with spring flowers, or industrious harvesters, to provide a wider range of subject matter. In sun-soaked Cyprus, winter creates incredible, energetic scenes with wild and windswept waves and white horses.

PAINTING HOLIDAYS, MONTH BY MONTH

At the start of the year, January and February, Cyprus provides painters with plenty of options, often under blue skies and with few crowds. March is regarded as the best month to paint in Morocco. Conditions are a bit more reliable than the winter, although you’ll need plenty of layers as the sun sets over the sand dunes. April in Scotland is atmospheric and signals the start of small ship cruise painting trips around the Isle of Mull. May is generally considered the best month to set sail on the west coast of Scotland for pleasant sky blue pockets in the spring. June, July and August can be a tad on the hot side for artists in Andalucía and Extremadura. If you do venture here in summer, make the most of the swimming pools, seaside, sangria and siesta time. September is still warm in southern Europe and Morocco, proffering plenty of rural subject matter during the harvest as well as wild and woolly seascapes as October draws in. November and December are not the best months to paint anywhere other than a studio if you’re in Scotland. You’d be better off opting for Cyprus which still boasts relatively warm weather as well as a much more authentic local ambience in the Troodos Mountain foothills.
