1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The beautiful views along the coast, seeing stork nesting sites.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Some sections of the hike are challenging, be sure you are up to the challenge.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. The tour employs local operators, encourages use of local restaurants and providers. We chose to travel to and from the start of the tour by bus, which the provider helped arrange. It was an excellent option.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
This will be a five star for us. Excellent planning, excellent choice of accommodations and spectacular scenery.Ruth Anderson review 5 Oct 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
A very well organised vacation by Ricardo. Great communication, perfect accommodation, maps, guides, and support throughout our week. The highlight, of course, was the magnificent, unspoiled scenery and the great walking.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
I would use Ricardo of the tour operator to plan your walk.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. Being able to support local cafes, restaurants and shops was important to us, and we were delighted to do it. The walking trails were well marked. Signs asking not to deviate from the paths, to protect the vegetation, etc. were clear. A lot of effort has gone into developing this coastal trail.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
A wonderful way to discover Portugal, its amazing coastal walks, wonderful friendly people and great food. I will be back to do more walking.Elisabeth Pasterkamp review 30 May 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The beauty of the rugged coast and the stork nests on the cliffs.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Depending on the time of the year, bring good sun protection.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Certainly benefited local small benefits. We were conscious about leaving no trace, unlike other hikers who left toilet paper along the trails.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The coastal walks and the wild flowers.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Bring walking poles. Be prepared to walk on sand.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All the accommodation, restaurants, cafes and services we used seemed to be run by local people not large businesses. Meals consistently featured excellent local produce. The hotels seemed to adopt the environmental measures you would hope to see. The Rota Vicentina didn't seem to have had a negative impact on the national park.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Fantastic. Beautiful landscape and well organised in every respect.Gayle Ann Gourwitz review 3 Apr 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Well the scenery of course was fabulous. But the fresh fish at dinner was the most memorable. Looking at my photo roll, the majority of shots are before and after a delicious meal.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Put in a new pair of contacts or maybe get your glasses upgraded with a better prescription, because you want to see it all clearly. The visuals are breathtaking!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The locals seemed happy to obliged whatever my questions or concerns. Being alone, not sure my expenses were enough to financially impact anyone. But my opinion of the local flavor is bursting with kindness and quiet contentment.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
A+ Absolutely no regrets or misgivings.Aidan review 18 Nov 2021
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Great clifftop walks with stunning vistas over the coast, also some good inland stretches with a feel for the countryside.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
There is a fair amount of walking in loose sand, which can be a bit tough going, but the consistently superb scenery more than makes up for it.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Apart from the flights to get to Portugal, this is a low-impact vacation with involvement of the locals in e.g. providing accommodation.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Highly recommended!Sally Phillips review 4 Oct 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Wonderful variety inland and coastal walking. Stunning coastline.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Good long walks everyday so helps to be fit although it is not a difficult walk3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. As confirmed by a hostel owner who said that the Vicentina walks had brought much needed employment to the area. It complements their summer bookings and extends the season very successfully4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent with a great variation in places we stayed, some very simple but all clean and welcomingTara Fenwick review 5 Apr 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Unbelievably gorgeous coastline; profusion of spring wildflowers; excellent Altejo-style cooking available in every village inexpensively; very clearly marked trail.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Bring good hiking footwear (we were glad of our boots) and in some months, waterproof jacket/trousers. Be aware a lot of the hiking is in soft sand (at least 35%). Time estimates for each day were accurate for us - we took lots of stops for photos! Binoculars are handy given the number of marine birds and storks. The least interesting bit was from Rogil to Aljezur - flat walking on farm track - you could always get a taxi on that bit. You get a taxi transfer (included) at the end from Arrifana back to Aljezur for your final night - a very welcome plan given that almost nothing was open in Arrifana (but gorgeous beach and cliffs - don’t miss it).3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The Portuguese govt and E.U. have invested a great deal in protecting this coastline, opening low impact access to the public, and adding interpretive signs about the environmental dynamics of the region. It would be great to see more people taking the opportunity to hike at least a few days of this trail - so we are spreading the word to our hiking clubs back in Canada. Also, everywhere there were signs offering opportunities to volunteer in Rota Vicentina maintenance - something worth considering. Finally - Since we were hiking ahead of the main season, we found that guesthouses as well as cafes/restaurants were little used, so perhaps our business was welcome.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Exceeded expectations in every way - a fantastic vacation. Vicentina Travel is not much more expensive than arranging the whole thing yourself and paying the luggage transport and accommodation. However with the tour operator, you get very good rooms and substantial breakfasts that are right en route (not so easy to arrange yourself when some speak only Portuguese), excellent recommendations for dinners, good advice for getting round some of the tricky or dull spots of the walk, and really helpful prompt information from Ricardo - both during planning and doing the walk.Linda McDougall review 31 Mar 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The jaw dropping beauty of the Algarve Coast exceeded our expectations. Weather was perfect in late March and wildflowers were at peak bloom. Storks were nesting and this was another highlight and other birds like peregrine falcons and hoopoes were just as exciting to watch! This trail is so well marked you practically do not need a map!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Download Wikiloc app for extra comfort with navigation just in case - it beeps if you go off the trail. Sand can be challenging to walk on at times but scenery etc is worth every step. Add extra rest days in Milfontes - it is the perfect little village w great scenery and food is amazing! Take the 5€ ferry across the River to avoid the car bridge - it is really fun!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes I hope so! More could be done to reduce single use plastic and waste at local hotels and restaurants. We drank the tap water it is great!4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
10/10 - we would go back and do it again! the operator and Ricardo were really great!Bill Akeroyd review 3 Jun 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The enormous seas on our first day. Flowers just coming into bloom. The storks nesting on sea stacks. Good food. Good accommodation. Friendly walkers and locals.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take your walking poles. They are helpful walking on sand and steadying one in the very strong winds on the cliff paths. The left luggage at Faro station closes at 4pm. Food is generally good but the portions are often huge. Bread and olives are brought to your table when you sit down, they will be added to your bill but you can say no thank you. Walking is mostly easy but there are a couple of difficult descents and a long trek on day 5 along irrigation canals.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. The whole ethos of the Rota Vincentina project is conservation, sustainability and supporting local communities. We booked with a local company who are involved in the project.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Enjoyable. Well organised and waymarked.Brenda Hindley review 2 Apr 2018
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
On the walk from Almogrove to Zambujeira we missed the path, the cliffs were spectacular but the weather conditions made it difficult and we lucky to spot some horses taking a path through fairly dense undergrowth which enabled us to get to a village without going closer to the cliffs which would have been dangerous. The wild flowers were particularly spectacular, especially the lupins.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
The detailed itinerary should have been made available prior to departure since a good level of fitness is required and the rain had made the paths particularly hazardous. A walking stick is essential and a good head for heights is required. More information about the landscape would have been helpful and would have made the walk more interesting.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
No, the overnight stops were disappointing in that there was little or no contact with local people - we were not made particularly welcome and in several places there was no local community - just vacation accommodations blotted on the landscape.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Even accepting that the weather was particularly poor it was disappointing.Read the operator's response here:
Thank you for your feedback.
I understand that it had been raining for the all week, something we cannot control. We provided assistance and support when needed/requested all the time. Below you will find our opinion:
This way is a fully marked and well-maintained trail, being markers more than 10 meters away from cliff edges that´s why this is one of the few certificate trails from Leading quality trails.
We had many clients with vertigo traveling with us in the past before, without any problem.
Markers take walkers along the safest option available, there could be other ways of crossing difficult areas, but you could be entering in private lands without authorization. Following the markers allows everyone to walk along authorized paths and to avoid sensitive areas of the Natural park helping reducing impact.
Weather conditions on that week were not the bests and some of the passages were a bit slippery.
2 A: All trips have a previous briefing that happens in the first hotel, explaining all itinerary and all the information is provided in paper, being possible to
short distances in each stage on request.
In our opinion Walking stick is not essential but it always depends on each participant level and experience, being optional to bring it. If needed we can
land them locally.
Additional Information about culture is being produced and will be implemented in the next few months.
3. A: Allow me to totally disagree. You booked this vacation through a local company (us), and you have been used only B&B owned locally, local restaurants
from our recommended list, local markets, and supermarkets to buy supplies.
Having lousy weather could happen and locals will stay home during their free time. Remember some of this towns have less than 1000 residents.
4. A: Even accepting the weather conditions (we can´t control that), we are really sad to know this after the vacation, when we can´t do anything to improve it.
Support was available all the time.
Hope next time you will get a better impression of the area and a better weathercast.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Stunning coastal scenery which changes along the route. Very remote & unspoilt coastline. The organisation was fantastic and all accommodation was lovely (we were upgraded at a couple of places due to being low season).2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
The walks are mostly flat but the paths are very sandy and occasionally hard work so it is worth allowing sufficient time for each walk. There is a time guide for each walk & we felt they were very accurate.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The paths were diverted occasionally to reduce coastal erosion. We stopped at small villages for drinks/snacks therefore supporting the less touristy areas.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent. Thank you to Ricardo.Nicholle O Leary review 19 Sep 2017
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We walked from Porto Covo to Arrifana over 6 days and we had an absolute ball. Throughout the entire week, it was some of the best scenery we have ever seen and the trails were so easy to follow. Our luggage was transferred from location to location and the accommodation was great - especially the unique little bed and breakfasts in Milfonte, Longueira and Odeceixe!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
The tour operator who organised the vacation for us and was so helpful before we left for Portugal and met us on the morning we began the walk for our "briefing" which was great, as we then felt better prepared and knew what to expect. We did struggle at little on the first day, as there was a lot of walking through sand dunes - but Ricardo had indeed told us that this would be the hardest day - the coastline was beautiful and this made up for the hardship! Good walking shoes is obviously a must, and be prepared for lots of sand! I was very happy that we had the luggage transfer as I would not have enjoyed carrying a heavy backpack - but each to their own!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes - absolutely. We really enjoyed the feeling of being off the beaten track and staying in the little fishing villages each evening. The local restaurants were so lovely. It was such a treat to enjoy the local cuisine and relax after a day's walking and we really enjoyed the fairly buzzy but chilled out atmosphere at each location. Our accommodation certainly didn't disappoint either, as I have said above.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
I would give this vacation 10/10. Amazing part of Portugal, and really well organised. Absolutely no complaints - we loved every minute and didn't want to come home. What an amazing part of Portugal. Looking forward to our next visit already!Margaret Skuce review 18 Sep 2017
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Scenery along route was amazing.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Temperatures in Sept were perfect for walking but if one is interested in flowers then better to go in late spring as I imagine the colours would be fantastic then.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. Restaurants recommended were in the main local owned so it was good to support locals and to enjoy regional cuisine. Some cafes along way were very much dependent on walkers for income.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent well organised trip, very professional and very quick to respond to any needs we had while on route.Read the operator's response here:

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The track is one of the most beautiful coastal walks.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Spring is a great time to do the walk as the dunes are covered in flowers, rosemary, lavender and thyme.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I believe so. It brings work and visitors to some small rural and coastal areas where jobs are often scarce.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent.Read the operator's response here:
Great to have feedback from clients. Thanks for helping promoting this area of Portugal and our coastal trails along the Rota Vicentina.
Many Thanks

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Breathtaking cliff top walking with the Atlantic breakers smashing into rocks below.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
A lot of walking on sand & sand dunes recommend good boots rather than trainers or sandals to help keep sand out. There are some sections that involve walking on tarred roads ,so may wish to consider taxi / bus on these sections.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely great that we could shop in local shops & restraints & stay in small hotels & hostel in the small villages & towns where we stayed.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Stimulating due to the fantastic sea vistas & rugged cliffs & beaches. Relaxing due to the walk at your own pace" way of getting between overnight stops.Ann Denness review 29 May 2017
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Beautiful wild flowers, storks nesting on sea stacks and swallows nesting everywhere in the little villages.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Learn a little Portuguese if you're doing the Historical trail - people in the countryside don't tend to know English (though can often manage French). It really breaks the ice if you have a go. There is very little shade on much of the Fishermans Way - go earlier in the year or be prepared to carry more water and cover up.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We stayed in small local b&bs and ate in local restaurants/bars - no chains. We were made very welcome by all the locals who seemed pleased to see us and interested to know what we were doing. (This was probably more so as it was very quiet in May - their 'season' doesn't start til June).4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We had a great time - there were some tough days (mostly due to high temperatures and endless sand dunes) - but we loved Portugal. The people were lovely and all very proud of their country, countryside is beautiful and amazingly well-kept and tidy, even in the back of beyond, and we ate and drank very well and very cheaply. We're looking at returning next year.Rosemary Cunniffe review 22 Jun 2016
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Unending beauty as we walked along the coastal paths, the glorious Atlantic foaming & crashing down to our right. Pristine environment, a profusion of wild flowers, the scent & sight of perhaps twenty different varieties. Ideal walking conditions,a lovely breeze from the sea & mild temperatures (late May). The coastline stretching for miles in both directions. The sight of magnificent storks and their nests, cleverly situated on remote, high rocks. It was a heavenly walking experience. A feast for the senses and easy on the feet!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Bring binoculars so you can get a closer look at the storks. And bring plenty of socks as the sand may well end up in your shoes as it did ours! Be prepared for spells of walking/ploughing through tracts of soft sand which inevitably slows down the pace a bit.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Well I hope so. Understand that it has extended the season for local people. We loved staying in the local, small scale accomodation. I think this kind of vacation does support conservation. We met numbers of wonderful, serious walkers who completely respect the environment.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We both absolutely loved this vacation. We are spreading the word among walking friends & would wholeheartedly recommend it. We felt well looked after by the vacation provider and by Ricardo who provided an excellent service from my very first contact with him.Inger Westerlund review 13 May 2016
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The beautiful vast coastline was so amazing and we just couldn't get enough of it. Every day we were sad when the days hike came to an end because we had to leave the coast to find our stay for the night.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We can highly recommend Ricardo. He is a really competent travel advisor and will give you a lot of tips and tricks about the hikes. He is also very sympathetic and answers all questions you may have both before and during your visit.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, we were staying at local B&B's and were so well received everywhere and got excellent treatment at all places. We had a lot of local products and really felt that the travel was well thought over as a concept.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Absolutely wonderful. We enjoyed every moment of it and will treasure all the memories we have been getting. We are already discussing when we can come back and do other trails along the coast.Jeffrey Fish review 29 Jan 2014
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
If anything stands out on our tour it was the vistas, the views. Without a doubt, some of the views stop you dead in your tracks because they are so stunning. The tour company did a great job making sure we see the best sights, sometimes deviating from the Rota Vicentina paths because they felt a better idea was called for. But that doesn’t negate the other important details we loved too; unique foliage, colourful mushrooms, patterned rocks formations, rustic villages, friendly people - all added to the experience. Special mention goes out to Maria at the Monte Novo and the other local folk in Longueira for providing such wonderful hospitality.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Make sure you become acquainted with the marker system of the trails before you begin. The Rota Vicentina is very reliable and marked with great frequency compared to some of the other routes in Europe. The markers even go so far as to let you know when there may NOT being anything to follow for a while. The tour company provided a GPS with the route marked out perfectly so that provided terrific peace of mind. In fact the only time we got in trouble was when we ignored the advice of the GPS route. Bring lots of water and snacks; small towns with stores & restaurants are occasionally part of the route but not always. Have a fully charged cell phone to call for a bit of assistance and emergencies. Signals are strong for most of the routes. The company was pretty easy to contact for questions, but we tried not to bug them unless very critical. So we sent emails with questions which were usually replied to in short order. For those afraid of heights, parts of the Fisherman’s Trail will prove challenging. The Fishermen who carved this original trail were, in a word, crazy. There are times the trail literally skirts a sheer vertical edge 130meters above a pounding sea. It is very stable ground, but intimidating. Most of the time there is an alternate route you can find that others have chosen to do that is a minor deviation from the main path. But there are a few times when there simply is little choice but to skirt the thin edge. Check weather reports for storm surges especially when traveling on beaches. In the off-season, with less daylight, some of the walk’s lengths are easily achievable only if you don’t take the time to stop and enjoy views, museums, forts and other attractions. Our tour was in the shortest days of the year and we sometimes found ourselves scrambling to reach our destination before dark - a scary prospect in some high elevation, rural areas. A high power flashlight is a good idea regardless of the time of year. The tour company takes exercise to heart and provides a top-rate hiking experience. Our plan called for hiking to another town almost every single day and we enjoyed that very much. But if you like to soak in more of the towns, the history, the culture & the people, or if you just think you might need a break or two, you may wish to make sure there are a couple of towns you stay in for at least two nights. We recommend an extra day in Aljezur, and/or Odeceixe. Sagres is a bit tourist-y (less genuine Portugal) for our taste but the areas around them have great things to see and do for a day as well.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Our typical off season experience? Locals were frequently surprised to see us. That didn’t mean we weren't welcome. Quiet the opposite. Very friendly! We felt the extra revenue from our expenditures must help everyone. Assuming other travelers were like us and you take out everything you bring in (i.e. disposing of garbage properly) then this tour offers remarkably little impact on the environment. Since the trails were marked reasonably well and there was very little reason to depart from the suggested path we felt our impact was minimal.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Wonderful vacation! More Canadians (North Americans) should know about Portugal and it’s walking tours. We would not hesitate to recommend this tour company for the Rota Vicentina trails.Barry Corbett review 7 Nov 2013
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The Fisherman's and Historical Walk of the Rota Vincentina was the most memorable and exciting part of our vacation. The trail was incredible. The coastal scenery was breathtaking and access to isolated beaches provided great natural experiences. The trails were well marked and the maps and itinerary provided were excellent. The route chosen - from Porto Covo to Alzejur was a perfect blending allowing just the right walking times to take advantage of the cultural and natural environments.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We would give the same advice to any travelers walking long distances...pack light, carry plenty of water and a first-aid kit. In short be prepared for any conditions. We were provide with a GPS downloaded with the trail maps. This was an excellent tool.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We feel that overall our vacation benefited local people and supported conservation. We stayed in local guest houses, bought supplies and dined in local restaurants. Walking and staying on the well marked trail minimizes damage to the coastal ecosystems. There was however on many beaches a significant amount of plastic garbage washed up on shore. This is not a criticism of the local jurisdictions but sadly a sign of the times and an international problem. It may be possible to employ local people or organize volunteers to remove the garbage. This would reduce hazards to local wildlife and enhance the natural experience. Overall the Rota Vincentina provides an amazing opportunity to support conservation and experience the rugged beauty of Southwest Portugal with the least impact.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
The self-guided walking tour of the Rota Vincentina was overall a great experience. We would gladly return to walk some of the other routes of Southwest Portugal. Our host Ricardo was helpful, professional and accommodating.Holiday Reviews
