Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONThe vehicles used to transport people from their hotels to the Maasai village are hybrid vehicles (electric and petrol) is a shared vehicle (as there is no public transport to the venue). The vehicles used are Vellfires and 2024 models. From the point of disembarkation, our guests walk to the village. For the days of the trip and the activities involved, our guests walk to various points in the valley for these activities.
In catering for the food, our guests get involved in preparing a vegetarian meal and the vegetables are sourced from local Maasai gardens. The food is cooked on a biogas system which is powered by the dung Maasai cattle herds. This means that the Maasai do not forage or destroy local habitats for firewood. The biogas system produces a high quality and non toxic fertiliser which is used on the Maasai's farm. All the food we provide on the day comes from the local farms.
Environment and Wildlife
Whist we do not provide accommodation (as clients book totally independently of us). We do get the clients to engage in our re-afforestation programs. Tree planting is one of our activities which is overcoming erosion due to over grazing. Our guides are all locals i.e. they are the Maasai herdsmen whose families have lived for generations in the area and who have vast knowledge about their environment.
People
Local EconomyWe employ up to 10 Maasai staff who act as hosts, guides and skill instructors. The entire trip is managed by local staff. We also support the local Maasai in jewelery making and their small businesses where they sell their jewellery. We do this by providing seed funding for their small businesses and also enabling them to sell their jewelery to the guests which we send to them. As a not for profit, this is funded by the tour fees charged to clients.
Employment. Inclusivity and Diversity
100% of the people we employ are local Maasai or Kenyan people. Those employed include young men, single and married women and grandmothers. The latter two groups are particularly marginalized in their societies. Our wages are paid according to the Department of Labour in Kenya. The diversity strategy is to employ a cross section of persons with an emphasis on women and senior citizens. This trip is also available for people with limited mobility and vision or hearing impaired. We have Maasai who have been trained as guides for the hearing impaired and use sign language to communicate. The villages all have toilets equipped for wheel chairs and the villages have walkways that cater for wheel chairs. Our program within the Maasai villages host many local schools in the area and these days are provided free of charge for those local schools. These schools are particularly local schools for disadvantaged children.
