Responsible Travel

Planet

Carbon reduction

The organization prioritizes locally sourced, seasonal produce whenever possible, with the majority of our food coming from nearby farms and suppliers. This helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation. Lake Chivero volunteer program works closely with local small-scale farmers and cooperatives to support their sustainable practices. Having a comprehensive recycling program in place separates waste into categories such as paper, plastic, glass, and organic matter. The organic waste is composted and used to fertilize the gardens around the park. Any non-recyclable waste is disposed of responsibly through licensed waste management providers. All of the facilities use energy-efficient LED light bulbs, and we have installed solar panels to supplement our electricity usage, reducing our reliance on the grid. The project have a water conservation system in place, including rainwater harvesting and the re-use of greywater for irrigation.

Environmental and Wildlife:

The team works closely with local conservation authorities to protect the wildlife and natural habitats within the park. Following Zim Parks, they have implemented eco-friendly practices, such as limiting visitor numbers, maintaining designated trails, and educating guests on responsible wildlife viewing. Lake Chivero focuses on four main programs for volunteers all centered on conservation. Each program focuses on a special aspect pivotal to the Park’s efforts to manage and utilize its resources as well as enforce conservation efforts. From on-land activities such as anti-poaching to monitoring and managing of the Black Rhinos in the intensive protection zone (IPZ) to fighting to control the hyacinth weeds that threaten the aqua-life of the lake. It is the diversity of programs that are offered at Lake Chivero and the far-reaching consequences of volunteer intervention that makes it a unique and special African experience.

People

Local Economy

The organization makes a concerted effort to hire local staff and work with local suppliers and service providers whenever they can. This helps to maximize the economic benefits for the surrounding community. They also provide training and development opportunities for local employees to enhance their skills and career prospects. Through the community outreach program, locals are educated to take better care of their environment creating an appreciation and ultimately opportunities to be employed where the community benefits financially.

Employment, inclusivity & diversity

All staff, including the ground team and operating partners, are paid at least the minimum wage or above in Zimbabwe. They regularly review and adjust compensation packages to ensure fair and competitive wages. The team consists of 25 staff members, 12 are women. The program is committed to promoting gender diversity and inclusivity within the organization. They also provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities and from underrepresented groups.
