Family wildlife
At Responsible Travel, we don’t support zoos; we believe spotting wildlife in the wild is the best way to see it.
Family safari
With the right guides, lodges and itinerary, a safari makes an amazing family vacation, and you can even end on the beach.

CARBON REDUCTION

From solar power and energy efficient lighting to water conservation and waste reduction, these camps take practical steps to reduce their environmental footprint.
Flatdogs Camp avoids single-use plastics and uses filtered water in refillable glass bottles.
Blue Zebra uses solar energy, runs an on-island water treatment system, and has banned plastic straws and bags.
Kumbali is largely self-sufficient thanks to its organic farm and permaculture practices, promoting sustainability from the ground up.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

All the camps on the above itinerary operate within or alongside protected areas - from the iconic Mosi-oa-Tunya and South Luangwa National Park to the Lake Malawi National Park. Each has a clear conservation mission. Flatdogs Camp, for example, is a supporter of CSL, which conducts vital anti-poaching patrols and wildlife monitoring especially for endangered species like African wild dogs and leopards.

At Blue Zebra, marine and island conservation is a priority. The lodge is part of the MareSanct Conservation Trust, which focuses on protecting aquatic habitats, managing sustainable tourism, and restoring biodiversity - particularly among Lake Malawi's endemic cichlid fish.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Flatdogs has a strong ethos of local engagement. The camp employs almost entirely Zambian staff, many of whom come from nearby communities, and provides ongoing training to support career development. They also contribute to several local projects, including Conservation South Luangwa (CSL), and sponsor local schools and clinics through donations and in-kind support.

Kumbali runs alongside a working permaculture farm, providing employment and training to local workers. It also supports a community-based arts and education center, encouraging sustainable livelihoods through creativity and agriculture. Their work goes beyond just hospitality - this is a business rooted in community upliftment.

Blue Zebra is located within the Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Blue Zebra is part of a wider conservation initiative managed by Malawi Department of National Parks & Wildlife. The lodge actively supports local livelihoods by employing staff from neighbouring communities and using local suppliers where possible. Community outreach includes supporting local schools and contributing to healthcare access through local partnerships.
