Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTION

This six-day walking vacation is designed to have a minimal carbon footprint, with most of the journey covered on foot.

To further reduce emissions, we encourage the use of Japan’s excellent public transportation system, including trains and buses. As strong advocates of ecotourism, we actively collaborate with conservation groups to maintain trails and support local initiatives that protect national parks—helping to preserve nature and wildlife for future generations.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

We are proud to hold an Advanced Eco Tourism certification and have been at the forefront of sustainable tourism and environmental advocacy for over 30
years.

Leading by example, we inspire others to adopt responsible travel habits. Our goal is to provide guests with an unforgettable vacation while fostering a deeper respect and appreciation for nature. We hope that by the end of their journey, our travelers become environmental ambassadors.

To minimize our impact, we stick to designated trails, avoid trampling vegetation, carry out all waste (and even pick up litter left by others), and encourage guests to take only photos—leaving nature untouched. Our walks are carefully planned to include toilet access, and when none are available, we provide clear guidance on responsible waste disposal. We observe wildlife from a respectful distance, never feed native animals, and prohibit smoking and open fires during walks. Our philosophy is simple: “Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos, and pick up a piece of someone else’s litter.”

We also give back by supporting conservation projects in Japan. For every kilometer walked, we encourage guests to donate 10 cents, which we match—helping fund local environmental initiatives.

Sustainability extends to our office as well, where we use double glazing, solar panels, evaporative cooling, and green power. We follow the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle in everything we do.

LOCAL ECONOMY

On our trips, we focus on providing comfortable and charming local hotels or traditional Japanese Inns. We use beautifully designed Japanese accommodations that reflect the country's rich culture. Most accommodations combine modern luxury and historical charm with a combination of either traditional Japanese sleeping arrangements or both Western and Japanese styles. In some cases, they will have on-site natural hot spring communal bath houses.

Meals are typically regional, home-cooked and are elaborate affairs from a Western point of view served in a traditional dining area. When dinner is provided a traditional Kaiseki set meal is what is usually offered. Sometimes there is the option of a buffet at the larger Hotels. Lunches can be obtained in the many eateries and small supermarkets close to the accommodations or at cafes on the route.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

By traveling this way, we help support regional Japan’s economy and communities, many of which have faced population decline as younger generations move to the cities. Tourism plays a crucial role in keeping these areas vibrant, allowing us to experience the rich cultural heritage of Shikoku while creating lasting memories. More than just a journey, this pilgrimage offers a meaningful opportunity for reflection and personal growth.

We also encourage operators to prioritize local employment, especially by hiring local guides who offer deep knowledge and unique insights. Whenever possible, we support farmers growing local and organic produce, artisans preserving traditional crafts, and restaurants committed to ecotourism and sustainability. Through responsible travel, We contribute to the preservation of these communities and their way of life for generations to come.
