On this tour you will visit Taman Negara (which literally means National Park in Malay), generally regarded as the world’s oldest rainforest at 130 million years old. The Park was declared a National Park in 1938 and is the most extensive protected area of pristine lowland and evergreen rainforest in Malaysia. The Park authorities are dedicated to educating visitors in the importance of protecting this environmentally sensitive area by encouraging them not to stray from dedicated paths and avoid dropping litter and damaging flora and fauna. The Park Authorities spend time maintaining the paths to avoid erosion and ensuring visitors travel to sights in small groups to minimise impact. Sustainable practices include solar powered water heaters, waste composting systems and all-biodegarable construction materials and dimmed lighting to minimise impact on wildlife.


The coastal resort used by this tour embraces ecotourism at it's heart. Nature is respected at Pangkor Laut and it rewards visitors in ways that simply need to be experienced. Renowned for being a habitat to the Oriental Pied Hornbill and the Great Hornbill, Pangkor Laut Resort invested in preserving their existence and facilitating the increase of their numbers. Realizing a noticeable level of competition for naturally suited habitats (tree trunks with suitably-sized holes), the Pangkor Laut Resort Naturalist Department started the Hornbill Nesting Box Project by installing wooden nesting boxes made of recycled materials at different areas around the resort in the hope of giving the hornbills more alternatives for breeding.

Pangkor Laut Resort is also where the reef rehabilitation and concrete reef block project first started in 2007/2008 with 20 blocks sunk with Reef Check Malaysia.

People

Taman Negara only employs local guides to accompany clients, and the Mutiera Resort takes pride in having 100% Malaysian staff. All food in the Park is sourced locally, helping the local rural communities wherever possible. Local farmers benefit by selling their produce to the resort and the fact that it is produced locally reduces the impact of overland transport from the city.

The National Park also supports the remaining indigenous communities, encouraging engagement between visitors and the Orang Asli, meaning "Original People" of Peninsula Malaysia. Most of these communities in Taman Negara are the Batek or "Forest People" and who have lived in the rainforest for generations and the Mutiara Resort work with the Batek people in operations and tourism experiences, such as hosting tourists for demonstrations on how to make blow pipes. They have a strong focus on empowering local staff and educating visitors on the importance of environmental preservation through guided treks and boat safaris with expert guides.
