Travel guides

Java
This densely populated island contains many towering volcanoes, ancient temples and peaceful pockets beyond its megacities.
Indonesia
Our Indonesia travel guide aims to point responsible travelers in the right direction when it comes to what we rate & what we don’t.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Fair salaries are paid to all employees and regular training is provided to support future career development. Only local guides who are aware of local customs and cultures are employed which not only keeps the funds paid to staff within the local community but also helps avoid any potential cultural clashes between visitors and locals. All guides are also required to sign an agreement with our ground agents agreeing not to take visitors in their charge to unplanned sites such as schools, orphanages etc or to ask for donations or tips. Guides are required to turn off vehicles when idling to minimise unnecessary emissions and where possible, eco-friendly modes of transport are opted for such as becaks in Yogyakarta (pedal power).
Our local agents support a number of environmental projects in Indonesia. This includes the Indonesian Waste Platform which is working to to reduce marine plastic waste in Indonesia by 70% by 2040. The project’s primary goal is to support the Indonesian National Action Plan by reducing waste leakage into the environment by 70% and increasing the recycling rate to 30% by 2025. The beneficiaries are local fishing communities. Remarkably, the initiative has collected over 60% of the total waste produced, achieving an 80% recycling rate by implementing circular economy principles.
Our local agents also work with The Reef World Foundation which is working to increase the conservation reach of the Green Fins initiative and to work towards achieving its charitable objectives of a) promoting the wise use of natural resources, particularly coral reefs and related tropical resources for the benefit of local communities, visitors and future generations and b) to promote the advancement of education about natural resources, coral reefs, related ecosystems and their conservation. As part of this partnership, our agents will encourage suppliers to adopt the Green Fins code of conduct and certification to promote responsible diving and snorkelling practices in Asia.

People

Our local agent in Indonesia is entirely locally-owned and locally-staffed and firmly believes that tourism has a role to play in the economic development of poor rural villages. They aim to ensure that their community-based itineraries bring a positive experience to local people and visitors and allow the local communities a greater level of control over the activities in their region. They support many sustainable community tourism activities, many of which we can arrange suitable visits to, and endeavours to take guests to remote areas to discover the real Indonesia.
Our local agents play an active role in the Childsafe Network which aims to prevent urban children and youth from engaging in risky behaviour and/or dangerous situations that compromise their futures. The network runs an ‘always-open’ support center and 24-hour hotlines to assist children and youths living and working on the streets providing social, medical and economic development support. Our local agents vow not to employ under-aged staff, to terminate staff who do not comply with the child protection code, to promote ChildSafe information to agents and clients and train guides in ChildSafe practices.
