1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Pretty much all of it. The ruins of Jerash were amazing to see, floating in the Dead Sea is one of those iconic life experiences, and of course Petra is just one
gorgeous view after another. Our cycling ride to Little Petra was a tough ride but well worth the effort and our camel ride in Wadi Rum was the quintessential
Middle Eastern experience.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Be very clear about what kinds of hotels and experiences you are looking for. The company was very flexible and accommodating, but if I had been more specific from the beginning, things would have been organized more smoothly. Also, book early. I thought 2 months ahead was enough, but many things were booked up by then.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Parts yes, parts no. I was happy to use a local company and local guides for the trip, and we mostly stayed in what I think were locally-based hotels. The
environmental impact is harder to gauge. I find many hotels say they are concerned for the environment, but towels are still washed daily, even when hung on a rack, and of course the water bottle problem is an issue. We always travel with our own bottles, but hotels seem to only provide water in small bottles.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was a fantastic week...just what we were hoping for.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
Even though you travel with style in this program, it does not mean that you should not travel responsibly. One of the hotels we prefer to use is 5 star Rotana hotel in Amman. They are actively trying to reduce their footprints they leave behind on this earth. They are working in several ways to improve their environmental responsibility. They focus on energy conservation, water conservation, materials consumption and waste management. We are happy that there are luxury hotels in Jordan that have the same environmental values as us.Another example of one of our suppliers we happily work with is 5 star Petra Movenpick hotel. Sustainability is also very important to them. They have made the first efforts to save water by installing water saving devices. It decreases the water pressure, which leads to a huge saving in water consumption without affecting guests enjoyment.
You also have the chance to camp out on this trip - a low carbon form of accommodation (and one where we ensure all waste etc. is taken with us and disposed of responsibly).
At our office we try to reduce our waste output by making reservations via not via fax. And to drink water from big jerry cans filled with filtered water instead of buying plastic mineral water bottles.
People
You might not be staying at locally owned hotels during this trip, it does not mean that your traveling does not benefits the local community. You will be staying at big luxury resort hotels, who employ hundreds of local people. All getting a chance to support their own families because of your stay. You can encourage this extra by tipping the people that serve you.You will be driven around by a local English speaking driver who will point you in the right direction for souvenir shops etc. He will recommend shops to you that sell local crafts and produce. By encouraging our guests to buy products that are made in Jordan, we support the local artists.
Note that in Petra you will find children trying to sell you products, we ask you not to buy from them. So instead of bringing money home, they will be send to school by their families for a proper education.
