It is hard to pick out one particular highlight. The whole experience was amazing. Much of the scenery is pristine. The rural areas are a step back in time. Our hosts were unbelievably welcoming, even if we did not share a common language....we had milk fresh from the cow and food fresh from the garden. We even hand milked a cow. The wooden churches and painted monasteries are beautiful. Read full review

We particularly enjoyed walking in Piatra Craiului National Park; visiting the painted monasteries and attending a free concert given by Brasov Opera. Traveling on the sleeper train to Bucharest was an experience! Read full review

We went for the castles and culture, but it's the people that made our trip, especially our amazing guide Ben. We also loved the accommodation choices - the library in Richis was a highlight. Read full review

Staying at casa Ana and experiencing a traditional Christmas was amazing. Siebel was snow covered and delightful and the walk up to the monastery on Christmas Day through the forest was wonderful. Read full review

Most memorable was meeting the 96 year old local Lutheran guide in the fortified church and then the meal in the village...We came not knowing what to expect but a rich history and culture set in great natural beauty was revealed to us. Read full review

So many wonderful memories, but probably amongst the highest the beautiful panoramic views of rolling hills and valleys in Maramures, staying with local people, marvelling at the painted monasteries, and visiting the Brown bear sanctuary. Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We are committed to playing our part through caring for the places and communities that we visit. We will continue to work with our suppliers to deliver a responsible product and quality performance.
The company has been instrumental in forming the `Association of Eco-Tourism in Romania'. We are aware of the need to safeguard the best environmental practice in Romania. We are also aware of the threat to wildlife - that too many visitors can be a problem - our guides advise travelers how to respect fauna and flora.
We will contribute 5 euros per customer to Foundation Conservation Carpathia that aims to create a world-class wilderness reserve in Southern Romanian Carpathians.

People

We are committed to working for a better community for all, in particular in the areas visited by our customers. We are leaders in developing tourism in remote areas of Romania, bringing a source of income through a steady flow of responsible tourists. It is important to balance the impact of visitors with the effect on local communities and we strive to do this in a responsible way.

Good relationships have been established with a range of local supplier ranging from those providing accommodation to artisans making products with historical significance. Working with Responsible Travel, we are trying to open up new areas of tourism in Romania by encouraging small groups to visit more remote areas where the income they provide can make a real difference.
