Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Each region of the Douro Valley has its own natural beauty. Our priority is to enjoy this beauty without leaving a mark on Mother Nature.Waste - In our expedition we reduce the use of plastic packaging as much as possible. Each participant will have their own water canteen, avoiding the use of plastic bottles.
Each kayak will have a container to put the garbage/plastic found in the Douro River.
Water - whenever possible, we will use water from natural springs.
Energy - the Douro River has 5 dams on Portuguese territory that are used for the production of electricity and water storage. In this expedition we will see some of them.
Buildings - on our expeditions we will stay in small villages, farms, family houses. We try to avoid accommodation in large hotel units, as the energy cost, waste and environmental footprint are large.
Transport - whenever possible we use the train for our expeditions. Transfers can also be made by train or taxi van.
Suppliers - everything needed for the expedition will be made of recyclable material. For food, our suppliers are local, helping the local commerce and the development of the communities.
People
It is important for us to create a link to local communities. We make a point of valuing what each community has to offer, such as accommodation, the landscape, natural life. Throughout the expedition we will experience different food, different landscapes, different customs. The Douro valley is where the famous Port wine is produced. September and October are the harvest months. Many people come to help. Everything is done by hand, up and down the hills with baskets full of grapes. We invite you to participate in this harvest by helping the farmers.
It is important for us to participate, to make life in the countryside known.
The Douro valley is not only known for its famous Port wine, but also for its cave paintings (World Heritage by UNESCO). We contribute to the dissemination of the rock art in the region, visiting the museum and the rock engravings
To be part of this experience is to contribute to the sustainable development of small villages.
