Travel guides
From bullet trains to bubbling hot springs, we show you why Japan is such an interesting and unique country to visit.
Responsible Travel was built out of a love of solo travel, and we want to share the joy of it with you.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTIONFor this tour, there are no domestic flights or private car travels. During your journey, you will rely on public buses and a network of bullet trains, a favored mode of travel in Japan.
Additionally, you'll have the chance to leisurely cycle through Kyoto, and many of the activities involve strolling between locations. This keeps CO2 emissions per person lower.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Our itinerary includes a visit to the Arashiyama Monkey Park. Prior to this visit, your Adventure Leader will ensure that your interactions do not disturb or frighten the monkeys. Our aim is for you to witness these incredible creatures, from which we can learn much, and at the same time, we want to be very careful not to make them feel scared or in danger.
Given that tap water is safe to consume in Japan, we strongly recommend that all our travelers carry a reusable water bottle. This ensures you have access to water at all times, while also contributing to the reduction of plastic waste.
Our lodging choices are all managed locally and deeply committed to environmental preservation. During this tour, we will be lodging in hostels, guesthouses, and even enjoying a night at a traditional Ryokan providing an opportunity to engage with an authentic Japanese cultural tradition. The staff make sure to show you how to follow the facility's rules for proper waste disposal during your stay.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYThrough the selection of local tour guides, we actively contribute to the local community and create more job opportunities. The Adventure Leaders are closely connected to their communities and are eager to introduce our travelers to their cultures. Our dedication to creating welcoming environments on all our trips begins with these leaders. Besides our Leaders, you'll also have the special opportunity to meet local experts.
We make sure to help the local communities we visit. We try our best to work directly with local businesses for where you stay, and for what you do:
Every place you will stay at is owned by people from the local area.
Engage in an Authentic Culinary Journey where you'll explore the region's delicious food history. You'll get to make sushi yourself and try some sake with local makers. Experience local owned cafés, and take part in optional activities such as visiting a local baseball batting cage or bathe with the locals at a bathhouse.
The accommodations we use also encourage you to make use of the available local services. By doing so, your funds directly contribute to the local community and economy.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
The majority of our staff, including guides, are local individuals from the country who can provide insights into Japanese culture.
We also ensure that our staff receive at least the minimum wage and are covered by employment insurance.
Our Adventure Leaders undergo training to make sure travelers are well-informed about local customs and traditions. They also provide information regarding the suitable moments for capturing photos and/or videos, while also respecting the privacy of the locals.
We are dedicated to creating a friendly and inclusive atmosphere for customers, employees, destination communities, and local operators. This includes implementing a strict zero-tolerance policy for any form of racial, ethnic, religious, or gender-based discrimination in all their activities or operations.
