CARBON REDUCTION

While this overland tour of Ghana travels mainly by minibus, low impact activities of cycling, walking and kayaking allow travelers to immerse themselves in the varied landscapes.

Locally sourced food and traditional Ghanian dishes are enjoyed throughout the tour, including an opportunity for travelers to visit a small market to pick up ingredients for our cooking lesson at our guesthouse stay in the rural village of Bankro.


ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

We visit the village of Tafi Atome, where locals have embraced community tourism and will provide some insight into the area during a tour of the monkey sanctuary. The local mona monkeys that live here were once believed to be the messengers of the gods and the villagers have taken great strides in recent years to protect and preserve both their traditional customs and their simian neighbours.

We stay at the Bonkro Guesthouse, in a small rural village. In addition to the local school, the guesthouse was the brainchild of a Ghanaian foundation that works to improve the facilities and opportunities of the local communities here, as well as protecting the adjacent rainforest reserve – particularly the picathartes bird – from logging and timber concessions.

While staying in the village, we also participate in a tree planting project, which is helping to provide much need shade for the students of the school.

LOCAL ECONOMY

This tour supports the country’s entrepreneurial talents and local and independent business owners including: visiting a popular coffin maker and taking a tour of Jamestown with a local resident (as well as dining at his café) in Accra; stopping for a bead-making workshop at a rural family operation in Krobo; learning about adinkra cloth at a generations-old family business; learning about Ghana’s coco trade from a Fairtrade family plantation; meeting with local fishermen in and around Elmina; hiring a local drumming school for a workshop and performance for our final dinner.


EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Local hosts, guides and drivers are employed throughout the trip, offering not only employment opportunities, but a wealth of knowledge of their regions and country. This include specialist guides for our city walk, kayaking and wildlife experiences.

A donation of £10 is made on behalf of every traveler to our foundation, which supports education and community empowerment projects worldwide.
