Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Across all nine islands of the Azores, public transportation is limited, infrequent, and not designed for travelers. There are no trains, and bus services rarely reach major natural attractions, trailheads, volcanic lakes, or coastal viewpoints. Many iconic sites on islands like São Miguel, Terceira, Pico, Faial, and Flores are in remote or protected areas with no reliable transit access.Because sustainable transport alternatives are not available, private cars, private drivers, or pre-arranged transfers are essential for exploring the islands safely and efficiently. This approach reduces the need for multiple rental cars, supports local guides and small transport providers, and ensures travelers can reach the Azores’ most beautiful and fragile landscapes responsibly.
For dining, each itinerary includes carefully curated dining recommendations emphasising local cuisines. Vegetarian, vegan, and vegetarian-friendly options are provided. When meals are included with an activity, plant-based options are always available. For food enthusiasts, we design enriching culinary experiences, including guided tastings, farm-to-table dining, and private visits with regional producers.
We are proud to support Rewilding Portugal, a part of Rewilding Europe, an organization dedicated to restoring nature and wildlife and conserving wild landscapes through natural processes for the benefit of society.
We are also committed partners of TAP (Travelers Against Plastic), reinforcing our mission to promote sustainable and responsible travel.
People
All of our activity partners are locally owned, independent businesses. We work exclusively with guides and providers who specialize in creating intimate, authentic experiences deeply rooted in their communities. In some regions, we also partner with small, family-run transportation companies—often just a handful of trusted drivers we know personally—ensuring that you’re supported by local experts at every stage of your journey.
This 7-day trip to the island of São Miguel is crafted with responsible travel at its core, showcasing the island’s natural wonders while helping protect them for future generations. Guided walks through Ponta Delgada, the volcanic landscapes of Sete Cidades, and the geothermal terrains of the Furnas Valley—all part of the Azores Natural Parks network—promote low-impact exploration and support local conservation initiatives that safeguard endemic flora, crater lakes, and volcanic ecosystems.
Activities such as horseback riding on traditional trails, hiking the rim of Sete Cidades, and exploring Ribeira dos Caldeirões’ protected waterfalls minimize environmental impact while encouraging appreciation of native habitats. Your whale-watching expedition follows strict Azorean marine-life guidelines, helping fund research on cetacean protection in one of the world’s most important dolphin and whale sanctuaries.
Visits to thermal springs, geothermal cooking sites such as Cozido das Furnas, and family-owned tea plantations directly benefit local communities and preserve centuries-old cultural traditions.
From supporting rural villages to choosing locally owned cafés, markets, and restaurants, each experience deepens cultural understanding while ensuring your presence benefits the island’s people and protected landscapes. This thoughtful itinerary allows you to discover São Miguel’s volcanic beauty responsibly—honoring both nature and the communities who care for it.
