CARBON REDUCTION

Renewable energy & accommodation:
- 3 nights — Atlas Mountains eco-lodge (half-board). The ecolodge holds recognised green certification and operates with clear sustainability measures.
- Renewable energy: The lodge meets part of its energy needs with rooftop solar water heaters, reducing reliance on fossil fuels for hot water.
- Other carbon-reduction measures at the lodge: Green certification and local employment are core elements — the property is staffed entirely by village residents, so tourism revenue stays local and supports community resilience.

Human-powered transport:
At least two days include deliberate human-powered options: the Marrakesh bike/walk option (half-day) and the Atlas Mountains hike (day activity). In addition, many city and village experiences are on foot, further reducing vehicle use.
- Half-day city bike tour in Marrakesh. This activity promotes sustainable urban mobility and is run in partnership with a social enterprise that trains young women in guiding and bicycle repair (social + carbon benefits). Alternative: participants who prefer not to cycle can take a guided bazaar walk that follows part of the same route.
- Light hike in the Atlas Mountains. The itinerary includes at least one mountain-walking day (a light, experience-rich hike).

Local, seasonal food:

All included meals are locally sourced and seasonal. The program is built around family-run places and cooperatives that use fresh, regional ingredients. Specifics from the itinerary:
- Marrakesh: lunch at a sustainability-focused venue using local ingredients and conscious gastronomy.
- Atlas Mountains: lunch with a local Berber family, prepared from mountain-grown ingredients.
- Ecolodge: shared evening dinner featuring fresh, locally sourced produce.
- Volunteer day: a family will host the group for lunch after the volunteer activity, again using simple, local ingredients and recipes.

This farm-to-table approach keeps food miles low and directs economic benefit to local producers and families.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Eco-Conscious Building & Construction:
The eco-lodge in the Atlas Mountains is built using traditional techniques and natural materials, including pisé (rammed earth) walls, stone foundations, tadelakt plaster, and mud roofs. Heavy building materials were transported by mule to protect the surrounding landscape.

Water & Energy Efficiency:
Rooftop solar water heaters reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Drip-irrigated organic gardens, double-flush toilets, and an efficient wastewater system conserve water. Organic waste is composted or fed to animals, while glass and metal are collected for recycling.

Natural Pool & Circular Water Use:
Instead of a conventional pool, the lodge features a chemical-free natural swimming pool that uses a vegetative filtration system. The filtered water is reused to irrigate greenhouses, minimizing waste and avoiding harmful chemicals.

Cultural & Environmental Stewardship:
Through its non-profit initiatives, the lodge supports local health, education, menstrual hygiene awareness, and the preservation of Berber cultural heritage, including the creation of an ecomuseum. It has also established a local agricultural cooperative, helping farmers bring produce to market and promoting sustainable land use.

Immersive Nature Experiences with Local Guides:
A light, experience-rich hike through the Atlas Mountains is guided by a local expert, offering panoramic views, clean mountain air, and authentic stories about the region’s history, traditions, and daily life.

Hands-On Community Engagement:
A day on a local family’s farm invites us to volunteer—helping in the garden, tending plants, or assisting with animals—providing authentic cultural exchange while contributing to the community’s well-being.

Remote, Low-Impact Tourism:
We travel beyond the tourist trail into remote villages where tourism is nearly absent, encountering communities whose lifestyles remain closely tied to nature. These visits provide genuine cultural immersion while reducing pressure on already popular destinations and helping sustain less-visited rural areas.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Locally Owned Accommodations:
Both accommodations used during the trip are locally owned, ensuring that tourism revenue directly benefits Moroccan communities rather than international chains.

Community-Based Gastronomy:
We’ll cook together with local women while gaining insight into their daily lives and the inspiring work of their community. At a women’s non-profit organization, we’ll participate in an authentic Moroccan cooking class, learning the secrets of flavors and spices while supporting disadvantaged women in building hospitality careers.

Women-Led Cultural Experiences:
A traditional tea ceremony with local women offers both a taste of Moroccan hospitality and a chance for meaningful conversation with the women who work there.

Empowering Craftsmanship:
In the Atlas Mountains, we’ll visit a women’s carpet-weaving cooperative. We’ll see—and try for ourselves—the centuries-old process of washing, spinning, dyeing, and weaving wool into patterned carpets, with opportunities to purchase directly from the artisans, ensuring fair income remains in the community.

Local Guides & Community Visits:
All guiding services are provided by locals who share authentic stories of their homeland. Village visits and meals with Berber families distribute tourism income directly to rural households while keeping cultural heritage alive.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY

Local Employment Priority:
All the places we visit employ only local people, both in the cities and in the Atlas Mountains, ensuring that income from tourism remains within the region and supports family livelihoods.

Women’s Empowerment Through Tourism:
Throughout the trip, women play a central role—whether as chefs, guides, artisans, or hosts. Each experience is carefully selected to highlight and support women-led initiatives that create education, employment, and leadership opportunities in Morocco.

Accessible Community Initiatives:
We will visit a unique, accessible community space that supports the hearing-impaired community and assists families affected by the recent earthquake—demonstrating how tourism can contribute to resilience and inclusion.

LGBTQ+ Safe, Women-Only Space:
This journey is designed as a women-only trip that creates a safe and welcoming environment, also inclusive for women from the LGBTQ+ community. It provides a respectful space for shared discovery, empowerment, and connection among women traveling together.

Inclusive Employment Opportunities:
Several initiatives we visit—such as the social enterprise bike tour—actively train and employ young women in fields traditionally dominated by men, like guiding and bicycle repair, opening doors to economic independence and gender equality.
