CARBON REDUCTION

Throughout this itinerary, we are very attentive to the environmental impacts of our accommodations and activities. All hotels, agriturismi, and workshops we use are locally owned, and we prioritise those with clear sustainability practices. For example, several agriturismi near Grotte di Castro and Magliano Sabina actively reduce pollution by avoiding single-use plastics, recycling waste, and using energy-efficient heating and lighting. Renewable energy sources such as solar panels are increasingly common.

Electric cars can also be hired with enough notice.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

In addition, many properties or activities restore and support biodiversity. Excursions, such as the trekking in Stifone di Narni and visits to the Sabina countryside, are designed to have minimal ecological impact. Entry fees to protected areas, such as the Etruscan necropolises, support local preservation efforts.

LOCAL ECONOMY
All accommodations on this trip are locally owned; for example, the 18th-century ex-monastery in Magliano Sabina and the agriturismo in Grotte di Castro are public-run or family-run properties, giving direct economic benefit to the local community. The ceramic workshop in Torri in Sabina, as well as Mario and Beatrice’s apiary in Poggio Mirteto, are also local enterprises.
We maximise local economic opportunities through a variety of carefully selected activities: local guides accompany guests during excursions, cooking and ceramic classes employ local artisans and chefs; Food tastings use local producers’ ingredients. Visits to cooperative markets, small villages, and farms encourage spending that directly benefits the local economy while offering authentic cultural experiences.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Nearly all staff and guides engaged in the trip are from the region, with local knowledge of the Sabina, Umbria, and Tuscia areas. For example, Beatrice and Mario provide specialised training and tours at their apiary, and Eleonora teaches her ceramic courses. Some properties employ people who might otherwise face barriers to employment, such as individuals with disabilities; the Ravenna hotel is an example, employing members of a cooperative supporting disabled workers.

All staff are paid at least the local minimum wage, and ground operators maintain equal opportunities regardless of gender, nationality, or sexual orientation. The trip is LGBTQ+ friendly. Accommodations and activities are generally accessible to people with limited mobility or sensory challenges; for example, the Ravenna hotel is wheelchair-accessible, and Narni Sotterranea offers guided tours designed to be safe and navigable.
