Fewer flights, low-impact travel and shared transport

Our Sicily tour is land-only, with no internal flights, and uses a single luxury mini-bus for all group transport, significantly reducing emissions per traveler compared with individual car journeys or domestic flights. With a maximum of 12 guests, our presence remains manageable even at Sicily’s most sensitive archaeological and coastal sites, and we favour longer stays in each base to minimise transfers and associated emissions.

Human-powered exploration

Walking is an integral part of every day on this tour, from archaeological parks and historic quarters to baroque hill towns. Many site visits and city explorations are fully on foot, making a large proportion of daily activities low-impact and human-powered.


Locally sourced and organic food

Wherever possible, we favour properties and restaurants that use local and seasonal ingredients, lowering food miles and supporting Sicilian agriculture. In Palermo, for example, we stay at Palazzo Balsamo, where breakfast is created in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Giuseppe Costa using seasonal produce from the family’s own organic farm—a daily, low-impact celebration of organic Sicilian flavours. Near Agrigento, meals at Agriturismo La Casa di Bacco showcase estate-grown wine and ingredients from the surrounding vineyards and farm, further reducing transport and highlighting seasonal, farm-to-table cuisine.

Sustainable materials and supply chains

We look for accommodation partners who invest in durable, efficient materials and responsible supply chains. In Catania, our hotel is furnished entirely with Made in Italy supplies from leading Italian brands such as Molteni, Flos, Stilnovo, Dorelan, Philips and Indel B, supporting regional manufacturing and reducing long-distance shipping. More broadly, we prioritise properties that use energy-efficient lighting and appliances, smart room energy controls, improved insulation, towel and linen reuse programs, recycling systems, and (where possible) on-site renewables such as solar hot water or photovoltaic systems.

Vegetarian and special diets

Sicilian cuisine naturally lends itself to plant-based eating, with abundant vegetable dishes, pulses, cheeses, and grains. Vegetarian options are available every day, and in many locations we can also cater for vegans and other dietary requirements communicated in advance.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Nature-friendly rural stays
In Sicily we use agriturismi and rural estates that actively tend traditional landscapes such as vineyards, olive groves, and mixed farms, helping maintain biodiversity in these cultural environments. At Agriturismo La Casa di Bacco, staying amid the vines near Agrigento connects guests directly with a working agricultural landscape rather than a large resort setting.


Marine and coastal awareness

Experiences such as visiting the Marsala salt pans and taking a small-boat excursion off Taormina highlight the fragility of Sicily’s coastal and marine ecosystems. Our local partners work with small boats and limited group sizes, following routes that minimise disturbance while your guide explains the environmental pressures on lagoons, dolphins and other marine life, salt marshes, and coastal waters today.


Off-peak and shoulder-season travel

Where possible, we schedule Sicily departures outside the absolute height of summer, helping to avoid the worst peaks in energy, water, and transport demand that come with high-season tourism. Traveling in these shoulder periods also supports year-round jobs and offers a calmer experience in coastal and historic towns.

We aim for the great majority of tour payments to remain in Sicily by choosing locally owned or locally managed hotels, agriturismi, restaurants, and transport providers. Properties such as Palazzo Balsamo in Palermo, Palazzo Degli Antoci in Ragusa, and Agriturismo La Casa di Bacco near Agrigento are all Sicilian-run, so your stay directly supports local families, staff, and suppliers rather than international chains.

Local economic activities at the heart of the tour

Our Sicily itinerary is designed around local economic life, not around large-scale mass tourism. Guests engage with family-run wineries (on Etna, near Marsala, and in the countryside), agriturismi producing wine and olive oil, Palermo food markets and street-food vendors, Sicilian cart-painters in Ragusa, Modica chocolate workshops, and neighbourhood trattorie and cafés—ensuring that spending flows to small businesses and craftspeople.

Local guides and experts only

All our guides in Sicily are local: the tour is led by a Sicilian archaeologist, and specialists at UNESCO sites are qualified local archaeologists or certified guides. City and village walks are led by residents who know these places intimately, ensuring both expert interpretation and direct economic benefit to local professionals.

By operating Sicily departures outside the most intense peak weeks, we help extend the season for rural and small-town businesses, supporting more stable employment rather than short bursts of high-season work only. This is particularly important in places such as the Agrigento countryside and Ragusa, where year-round opportunities can be limited.
