CARBON REDUCTION

In South Korea, we travel between destinations by private bus and KTX high-speed train rather than domestic flights, keeping the trip's carbon footprint down while giving guests a chance to take in the scenery between stops. The group is also kept small (approx. 12 people), and much of each day is spent exploring on foot, from wandering Namsangol Hanok Village to strolling across Woryeonggyo Bridge in Andong, reducing reliance on vehicles within each location. Drinking water is provided throughout the trip rather than guests relying on single-use bottled drinks, cutting down on plastic waste over the course of the tour. Where transfers are unavoidable, such as the airport pick-up and drop-off on the first and last days, these are shared across the group rather than arranged individually, reducing the number of vehicle trips overall. Keeping the group small also means less pressure on local infrastructure at each stop, from roads to parking, compared with larger coach tours moving through the same sites.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The tour builds in time to appreciate South Korea's natural landscapes rather than just its cities, including a cable car ride through Seoraksan National Park for panoramic views over its mountains and distinctive rock formations. In Busan we also take in the coastline, from the cliff-side setting of Haedong Yonggungsa temple to the sea views at Haeundae, giving travelers a low-impact way to experience the country's natural scenery alongside its history and culture. In Andong, guests wander past the Nakdong River and through bamboo groves surrounding Ojukheon, a peaceful contrast to the cities on the itinerary. We also visit the DMZ, the 4km-wide buffer strip running 250km across the peninsula, which has been left largely undisturbed by human activity for over 70 years and has, almost by accident, become one of the most untouched wildlife corridors in Asia. Across the trip, these stops are woven in alongside the history and culture on offer, so guests come away with a rounded sense of the country's landscape as well as its story.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

Guests are accompanied throughout by professional, English-speaking local tour guides, and stay in locally-owned 3- and 4-star hotels rather than international chains, so spending goes directly into the communities visited. Meals and market visits are similarly rooted in local trade: Gwangjang Market, Sokcho Jungang Market, and Busan's Jagalchi Fish Market and Gukje Market all feature in the itinerary, giving travelers first-hand access to small vendors and street food producers. In Abai Village, our guests will use the local Gaetbae ferry and explore a market built by North Korean refugees who settled there after the Korean War, directly supporting a community shaped by displacement. Gamcheon Culture Village, once a hillside slum, is now sustained by local artists and independent cafés, and the visit channels tourism income into that same community.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

The itinerary is built around stories that don't always make it into standard tours: a visit to the War & Women's Human Rights Museum tells the history of Japanese military 'comfort women' survivors and connects it to ongoing conversations about gender-based violence in conflict. Trips to Independence Hall and Jinjuseong Fortress cover Korea's resistance to Japanese colonisation, while Abai Village and the DMZ visit center the experiences of families divided or displaced by the Korean War. Throughout the trip, guests meet directly with historians, first-hand witnesses, and local activists, with the expectation that these are treated as genuine exchanges rather than photo opportunities, guides are briefed to help travelers understand appropriate conduct around these communities and their stories.
