CARBON REDUCTION

This itinerary avoids domestic flights entirely, relying on a chauffeur-driven vehicle, a shared hill-country train journey and shared boats. The rail segment to Nuwara Eliya is one of the lowest-carbon ways to travel through the hills.

Jetwing St Andrews uses a biomass boiler fuelled by sustainably harvested cinnamon wood. Habarana Village by Cinnamon incorporates LED lighting, inverter air-conditioning and natural-ventilation design. Gal Oya Lodge uses solar thermal systems to heat water in guest bungalows and the kitchen, reducing reliance on grid electricity.

Gal Oya Lodge sources almost all ingredients from within 20km and grows some produce on-site. Cloud Nine Lanka Resort and Habarana Village work closely with nearby farmers and fishing communities. Jetwing St Andrews’ gardens and beehives supply vegetables and honey. These approaches naturally support vegetarian and plant-rich menus, reducing food miles.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Habarana Village runs biodiversity assessments, butterfly gardens and lake clean-ups, and contributes to the Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration project. Jetwing St Andrews maintains a model wetland supporting endemic amphibians. Gal Oya Lodge protects 20 acres of private jungle, maintaining wildlife corridors and supporting the Jim Edwards Wildlife Research Centre, which conducts camera-trap studies and species monitoring around the national park.

Habarana Village uses biogas digesters and rainwater harvesting. Jetwing St Andrews treats wastewater on-site and composts garden waste. Gal Oya Lodge follows a strict no-plastic policy, uses natural building materials and operates waste-sorting systems, reducing landfill and environmental impact.

Park entry fees in Wilpattu, Minneriya, Horton Plains and Gal Oya contribute directly to protected-area management and species conservation. Gal Oya Lodge’s research center contributes to long-term wildlife monitoring, supporting data collection that informs conservation decisions.

Gal Oya Lodge employs trained naturalists and runs a Naturalist Training Programme for local school leavers. Cloud Nine Lanka Resort offers guided wildlife safaris and nature trails. Jetwing St Andrews’ resident naturalist leads frog-watching tours and nature awareness sessions.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY
Many of the stays on this itinerary are Sri Lankan-owned and managed. Cloud Nine Lanka Resort is a locally owned boutique property sourcing vegetables and seafood from nearby communities.

Gal Oya Lodge works closely with neighbouring villages, commissioning local carpenters, builders and artisans for construction and furniture, and sourcing produce from local farmers.

Habarana Village and Jetwing St Andrews are part of Sri Lankan hotel groups that prioritise local sourcing and community partnerships. Jetwing’s impact sourcing strategy includes buying fish from local fishers, vegetables from nearby markets and supplies from small-scale producers.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Around 75% of Gal Oya Lodge’s team live within 10km, including several former poachers retrained as guides and staff, providing alternative livelihoods linked to conservation. Cloud Nine Lanka Resort has trained and recruited young workers from surrounding villages.

Jetwing Hotels runs the Jetwing Youth Development Programme, offering free vocational training to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom now work in properties such as St Andrews. Jetwing also operates a “Second Careers” initiative, creating structured employment opportunities for local women over 45. Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, including Habarana Village, support community projects such as home gardening schemes that improve food security and livelihoods.
