Carbon reduction
We minimise our environmental footprint through small group sizes (maximum 7–8 people), avoiding all internal flights, and using shared transport — 9-seat vans, minibuses, local ferries and boats. Clients never travel individually by private car hire. Our trips are hiking-based by design, meaning clients spend the majority of each day on foot, typically covering 4–7 days of human-powered travel per trip.
We do not arrange flights for clients and never include domestic or internal flights in any itinerary. In our pre-departure information, we actively encourage clients to check CO2 emissions by route using Google Flights or Skyscanner, to choose direct flights where possible, to pack light, and to consider rail travel to their departure airport — for gateway cities such as Lisbon, we highlight rail connection options from major European cities. We do not promote carbon offsets as a substitute for reducing emissions.
We prioritise small, locally owned guesthouses in destinations with high renewable energy penetration — Madeira benefits from significant hydro and wind capacity, and our accommodation partners are embedded in this energy grid. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available daily at locally owned restaurants using fresh, seasonal and regional produce, and we are developing a partner questionnaire to formally assess food waste and sourcing policies.
Environment & wildlife
In Madeira, we hike through the UNESCO-protected Laurisilva laurel forest and visit national parks, with entry fees going directly to conservation and park management. We avoid over-touristed sites, respect all local wildlife regulations, and follow strict Leave No Trace principles — including a carry-in, carry-out policy, where all waste is taken with us and disposed of responsibly, leaving no trace in the natural environments we visit. Clients never cross barriers or fences in protected areas.
We brief all clients before and during the trip on not spreading invasive plant species between sites — a particular concern in Madeira, where non-native plants pose a serious threat to native laurel forest ecosystems. We keep strictly to designated paths to avoid mechanical spread, and local guides reinforce this awareness throughout every hike.
As founder and guide, I hold a degree in environmental studies, and sharing knowledge about local species, habitats and conservation status is an essential part of every trip — understanding what lives in these landscapes, what is endangered, and why it matters is not an optional extra.
We personally vet all accommodation partners before use, asking about plastic reduction, recycling and water use, and we are formalising this into a written partner checklist that will include questions on food waste, palm oil and building materials. We actively reduce single-use plastic throughout our trips and drink tap water wherever it is safe to do so — which it is across Madeira.

Local economy
In Madeira, we stay exclusively in locally owned guesthouses and rural tourism properties, several of which are owner-operated, providing direct income to local families. 100% of our accommodation partners are locally owned — we do not use international hotel chains on any itinerary. By choosing these partners, we ensure that tourist spending stays within the local economy and supports the people who call Madeira home. We require all local operating partners to pay at least the legal minimum wage and personally vet them to ensure fair working conditions.
Trips are led by me personally as founder and tour guide (or my highly experienced colleague). I hold a degree in environmental studies and bring deep knowledge of the island's ecology, culture and communities. This means clients don't just see Madeira's landscapes — they understand them, and the people who live and work within them.
We dine exclusively at locally owned restaurants using fresh, seasonal and regional produce, celebrating the island's culinary traditions rather than bypassing them. We encourage clients to buy directly from local producers and artisans rather than tourist shops, and to leave reviews and tips for local businesses — helping small restaurants, guesthouses and artisans gain visibility and income beyond our visits.
