Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONWe are committed to offering low-impact vacations, which benefit the countries and communities we visit, as well as our travelers and the natural environment. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimise our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible.
This walking tour offers a low-impact way to experience the Western Lake District, with most of the vacation spent exploring on foot rather than by vehicle. With three days of guided walking from Hassness Country House, you can access Rannerdale, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater, and Ennerdale directly from the local area, reducing the need for additional transport, which helps keep the trip’s carbon footprint low. Local bus fares to and from trailheads are included, further supporting more sustainable travel choices, encouraging shared transport over individual car use.
Food throughout the vacation is provided at Hassness Country House, with cooked breakfasts, picnic lunches, afternoon cakes, and three-course evening meals included on most days. Vegetarian options are available, and vegan requirements can be accommodated when advised in advance, ensuring guests are well catered for after a day on the fells.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy in national parks, archaeological sites, monuments, and other sensitive areas like beaches and coastlines; these should be treated with the ultimate respect to maintain them for future generations. Our tour leaders are trained to promote this message to our customers during the vacation.
The routes pass through some of the Lake District’s most sensitive and valued landscapes, including rewilding projects in Ennerdale, flower-rich valleys such as Rannerdale, and tranquil lakeside habitats around Buttermere and Loweswater. Walking in small groups with experienced leaders helps ensure paths are respected and wildlife disturbance is minimised, while also allowing guests to gain a deeper appreciation of the natural environment and the conservation work taking place across the National Park.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYWe provide ample opportunities to explore the local area on foot, where you can shop for local wares and crafts and immerse yourselves in the destination's rich cultural heritage. To enhance your experience, your tour leader will be joined by a knowledgeable, well-qualified local guide for the duration of the trip.
The tour helps to support the local rural economy by bringing visitors into quieter parts of the Western Lakes, where tourism plays an important role in sustaining villages such as Buttermere and Loweswater. Stops at local pubs and cafés, along with time spent in nearby hamlets and communities, help spread the benefits of tourism more widely than in busier parts of the Lake District.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY
We are committed to responsible and sustainable travel practices that support both the local environment and surrounding communities. By selecting environmentally conscious accommodation, encouraging reduced waste, and prioritising sustainable transport where possible, we aim to minimise our footprint. Through respectful engagement and conscious travel choices, we strive to protect natural landscapes while delivering enriching and memorable experiences.
