CARBON REDUCTION:We are dedicated to promoting authentic experiences, supporting the appreciation and enjoyment of Portugal’s natural and cultural heritage sites while at the same time encouraging their protection by raising awareness of environmental issues with our travelers.
We have been partners of the Rota Vicentina since 2014, actively working to minimize the impact of visitors on these ecosystems. Traveling by bicycle is inherently one of the most eco-friendly ways to explore the region, ensuring zero-emission mobility and a profound connection with nature. We try hard to pass the message that human activity can threaten endangered species and habitats. For this reason, this self-guided tour is designed for small, independent groups, keeping our environmental footprint to an absolute minimum. During this bike tour, we alert travelers to become aware of resources, conserve water, stop littering, and respect the wildlife. Vegetarian meals available.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
This self-guided bike tour crosses some of the most beautifully preserved coastal landscapes in Europe, including the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, the Santo André Lagoon, and the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. This region features a great diversity of habitats, from the lush green rice fields of Comporta and golden dunes to virgin beaches like Melides, Amoreira, and Amado. Along the Sado estuary ferry crossing, cyclists can often spot bottlenose dolphins and numerous bird species, while the Vicentine coast boasts a varied nesting bird fauna, including white storks uniquely nesting on coastal cliffs. The constant presence of the Atlantic Ocean, the idyllic landscapes over the Serra da Arrábida, and the majestic nature of Cape St. Vincent complete one of the most pristine environments in Portugal.
So that the trails and coastal paths are always clean and ready to receive cyclists and walkers, we collaborate in annual cleaning and marking events of the Rota Vicentina trails. We promote the maintenance of a social, economic, and environmental system that meets the needs of the current generation without compromising resources for future generations. Furthermore, local residents and accommodation hosts consistently reinforce the importance of protecting these destinations, a mindset our cyclists can apply throughout the world.

LOCAL ECONOMYThe Rota Vicentina and Algarve Bike Tour means that we are actively contributing to creating a sustainable ecosystem, giving local authorities more tools to control and preserve this area. In this way, we are helping to conserve a rural lifestyle and contribute to the overall sustainable development of the coastal Alentejo and Algarve regions.
Through our cycling tour, we support the local economy by booking directly with local 2-star and 3-star accommodations in every destination of this route, including Setúbal, Santo André, Vila Nova de Mil Fontes, Odeceixe, Carrapateira, and Vila do Bispo. We rely on the local community to share their deep knowledge of the region, helping our travelers discover the best authentic restaurants, small cafes, and traditional artisan shops along their daily stages.
On this tour, as a coastal destination deeply connected to the sea and the land, we always recommend typical restaurants that serve traditional dishes. We focus on our “upstanding” local gastronomy, highlighting fresh fish caught with artisanal crafts in historic fishing villages like Porto Covo and Zambujeira do Mar. We also guide our travelers to unique local heritage sites, such as the Sweet Potato Museum near Odeceixe, which celebrates regional agricultural delicacies and supports local farmers. During the bike tour, we patronize small village cafes for lunch, and encourage our cyclists to visit local shopkeepers, craftsmen, and small businesses.
People have been occupying this territory for millennia, maintaining a strong bond between sea and land in their main economic activities. Time and time again, we are surprised by their authenticity. Supporting the local people of the Costa Vicentina and Algarve is crucial; it involves the community, promotes the sustainability of the local economy, and encourages the appreciation of this region’s natural and cultural resources. We encourage our clients to make small purchases along their journey, thereby bringing money and encouragement directly to each of these local families and businesses.
