Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTIONInternational flights to Bishkek are not included. Guests arriving at the recommended time share one group transfer from Manas International Airport to Chon Kemin Valley.
The retreat follows a continuous overland route through Chon Kemin, Son Kul, Tash Bashat, Issyk Kul and Bishkek. The group travels together in shared vehicles and no domestic flights are used.
We measure the emissions associated with the journey and use the information to identify where reductions can be made in future operations. We do not use carbon offsetting as a substitute for reducing emissions within our control.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The retreat takes place in remote mountain areas where facilities, water supplies and waste services are limited. Guests receive guidance on traveling carefully in these environments, including taking all litter away from walking routes, following the instructions of local guides and avoiding damage to pasture and lakeside habitats.
Guided walks follow routes selected by local guides who understand the terrain, weather and seasonal conditions. Group sizes are kept small, with no more than 14 guests.
Horse riding is optional and is arranged with experienced local guides. Routes are matched to each guest’s riding ability, with shorter rides available for beginners.
The Berkutchi experience is designed as an introduction to the cultural relationship between Kyrgyz eagle hunters and their birds. Guests learn about this longstanding tradition directly from a local practitioner.

LOCAL ECONOMYThe retreat is organised in partnership with a Kyrgyz travel company founded and run by two local women. They coordinate the guides, drivers, accommodation, camps and cultural experiences used throughout the journey.
Tourism spending is spread across several regions rather than concentrated entirely in Bishkek. The itinerary uses mountain yurt camps, locally run accommodation, guides, drivers, cooks, horse handlers and craftspeople in Chon Kemin, Son Kul, Tash Bashat and Issyk Kul.
The visit to the semi-nomadic family provides direct income for local hosts. The programme also pays local yurt makers, horse guides and a Berkutchi to share their knowledge and skills with the group.
Meals are provided by the camps, guesthouses, hotels and local restaurants used throughout the journey. Market visits give guests an opportunity to buy food, textiles and crafts directly from Kyrgyz traders and producers.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Our principal Kyrgyz partner is a women-owned local business. The retreat supports employment for Kyrgyz guides, drivers, cooks, camp teams, craftspeople and activity providers.
An English-speaking local guide accompanies the group throughout the journey. Their role extends beyond logistics, helping guests understand Kyrgyz history, rural life, nomadic traditions and appropriate behaviour when visiting families and communities.
The retreat welcomes solo travelers, friends and couples and is LGBTQ+ friendly. Yoga experience is not required and horse riding is optional.
Because the journey includes rough roads, uneven mountain terrain, shared yurt facilities and extended time above 3,000 metres, it is not suitable for guests with significant mobility limitations. Guests with health concerns relating to altitude should seek medical advice before booking.
Reclaim Yourself Retreats has been a certified B Corp since 2023.
