Evergreen lodge in Tortuguero National Park have a sustainability policy which outlines their commitment to - The appropriate use of natural, cultural and social resources, Supporting continual improvement of local communities , Sustained economic growth & appropriate use of assets and infrastructure.
They are also proud holders of the local CST certificate (Sustainable Tourism Certificate) which confirms that they undertake : To dispose of waste in a responsible manner / Consume natural & bio degradable products and promote recycling / That they employ and educate people from the local communities / Implement water and energy consumption reduction programmes / Promote customs and traditions / Maximise resource utilisation in order to reduce consumption.
Actively, they provide recycling bins in guest rooms and at points around the lodge. Re utilize fallen trees for trail maintenance, use bio degradable products where possible & have access to waste and water treatment plants.
Ultimately their goal is to create a long term social, cultural & ecological commitment.
They are members of the Rainforest Alliance and which protects children from sex tourism.
Environmental practices at the Arenal Springs Hotel include:
Energy Conservation: air-dried laundry where possible, Room keys turn on/off electricity, Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs are installed in public areas, room terraces, and administrative departments. & Low-watt mercury lamps are installed in the main parking area.
Water conservation: The hotel encourages the reuse of linens and towels, has installed Low-flow toilets & Low-flow sinks and showerheads and monitors water consumption and inspects the piping system regularly for leaks.
The recycling program at Arenal Springs Resort includes paper, aluminum, glass, plastic, and organic waste. Collection bins are located throughout the hotel’s property. The recyclable materials are given to a group of women in the community.
Waste reduction: Only durable and reusable drinking cups are provided, Shampoos, conditioners, and lotions are placed in re-usable containers and refilled, 100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap) is provided & Environment friendly cleaning agents are used by housekeeping staff.
Projects of the Hotel Belmar Sustainability Department includes Mother Earth - an organic farm with the purpose of reforesting large sectors. This seeks to obtain other benefits associated with reforestation processes, such as the protection of water sources, erosion control and carbon fixation.

Battery Recycling Project - This initiative aims to contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution, while opening the way to a process of environmental awareness in the community, and encouraging the monitoring of these practices by local organized groups. Currently, the hotel has established several battery collection points and they assume responsibility for storage, transportation and appropriate disposal of them. In a similar way, they are taking action to expand the scope of the project to the collection of other special handled waste, such as fluorescent and electronic equipment.


The Arenal Springs Hotel community programme includes monthly donations to Apreflofas and the La Fortuna Sport Association. Every 3 months, the hotel also makes contributions to the Danaus Ecocenter in La Fortuna and the Fundación Ángeles del Señor, an organization that helps low income families in the community.
The Hotel Belmar strengthening communities on sustainability criteria -
This project intends to build knowledge concerning sustainability in a participatory way, by providing technical support towards communities, which contributes to strengthening autonomy and local empowerment. As a result of this initiative, they have developed among other things, an environmental education workshops in local schools.

Pack for a purpose - Pack for a Purpose is a globally recognized initiative, which allows travelers to positively impact in the communities near their travel destination, in this case Monteverde. This consists of saving just a few kilos of space in the traveler's suitcase to bring supplies for schools, medical clinics and other organized groups that work for the community welfare. This allows tourists to generate a truly positive impact on the quality of life for the project beneficiaries.
Hotel Belmar utilizes the Pack for a Purpose Program to contribute towards the
following projects: "Maintaining the Children’s Eternal Forest Reserve,” "The Ranger Club
Youths of Monteverde” and the “Medical Cadet Corps."
